IMO: I wouldn't worry about 3GB or 6GB, was the 3GB better off than the 1.5GB 580? No, it was obsolete long before the buffer mattered.
Same thing with GK110, when 6GB vs 3GB matters, none of the cards out today will.
Only true in SINGLE card configs.
Tripple SLI or Quad SLI 580 would certainly not obsolete, especially with an OC... except where vram issues come in, which it does nowadays even at single monitor resolution like 1440 and 1600p.
People who folk out big $$ for multi card configs really should splurge extra for the higher vram models, IMO.
