I was a Graphic Design major (MFA) and am doing just fine. There is plenty of demand for quality designers out there. Front end web design, illustration, motion design, company branding, and a ton more. If he is skilled, has a good portfolio and resourceful, he will be fine. Creativity is a trait that is always desirable and generally lacking in people.

I'd advise against grad school though unless it is a full ride..

As for the gift, a high quality drawing set could be in that price range, if drawing is his thing.

You mean the people who understand that art majors pretty much get jobs teaching art and that creativity and artistic ability aren't things learned in college?

An artist would be far better off majoring in a business minded skill and then using said knowledge to create art and SELL it.

Liberal Art degrees are a scam sold to the morons who think going to college to draw is going to make them a famous artist.

Antisocial? because we are into tech?

Douchnozzle? Because we speak harsh reality?

For the record, I received two fine art scholarships while still in grade school. Got to travel to several art museums to take drawing lessons from some pretty bad ass instructors. Lost interest before I got to college though. Can still draw way better than most people. Just don't do it very much.

And since I assume you went to college for computer science, you now possess two sets of skills and should you ever decide to get into game development, you can draw and code your own things. Unlike an art major who can only draw it.

That's because the arts give this forum the shakes. If it were up to them and no one pursued the arts, everything would be grey, there would be no music, cars would be shaped like boxes, websites and company logos would be only text, there would be no movies, books or performing arts, and any sort of self expression would be seen as a waste of time. It would be an incredibly boring world.

nope, and it's not that I disagree with your sentiment.

It's the that initial response to such a person, asking a simple question and seeking a simple suggestion, is to give dickish responses of an unsolicited nature.

that is antisocial behavior--coming from a general population of cube monkeys.

Plus, this forum has a history of hating anything that doesn't fit into the tiny office/cube/code box that everyone is comfortable with. I know people here are more diverse than that--you seem to be--but the responses are always the same.

I think my edit to your post would be more accurate.

Plus, no one really came in her "hating" art.

Yeah, I'm gonna go with you haven't been around a group of males in your life, ever. Making jabs at each other is what they do. Especially, ones as easy as this.

Except it's ANY arts degree at all of any kind, not just actual art arts degrees.
Anything non-technical/non-science.

Some friends of ours have a son that is graduating with a degree in Art with an emphasis in graphical design. He's probably going to try for a Masters degree in art history.

We wanted to get him a small gift(s) worth ~$50.

His mom said he's into ink pen drawing right now and would probably like some "black ink Pigma Pens"...

Any other ideas?

Probably what mom and our MFA resident suggest. But if it was from 'here', the Wacom Intuos and Bamboo low end is 80 from the Egg. So that makes the laptop a media too.

A set of good tech pens with ink cartridges and different sized nibs would probably be around that. If you don't know, a gift cert to dick blick always works. Art major, animator, teaches at art school here.

for the gift, go with either a good set of the pens, a small set and a gift card or just a gift card.

God forbid people do something they enjoy rather than focusing on money for their entire life.

i have a BofA in multimedia, digital animation/ game design. im doing quite well, even tho i never went for a gaming job. i still design interfaces and do custom graphics, but i also build telemetry systems and program the back end. there are plenty of places an art major can land in and do well.

yea, i was not surprised either. but, tech forums are generally filled with techy people, and coding is much different than drawing (pen or computer), and rarely do the two mix or cross over.

Yah. I'm not surprised either, but they aren't really wrong either as a rule. Art is one of those field where you are either great or unemployed. I see tons of kids go through art school and look at them and their portfolio, and work ethic and think there is a very very low chance they will end up working in the field. FWIW that's true of most degrees.

However might as well go for something you have a passion in. An accounting degree might have been more useful but it would have killed my soul.

Yeah I remember when I was getting my MBA that there were a few MPAs in my accounting class who got their bachelors in something other than accounting. A few of them were going back to get into accounting because their original degree will never pay the bills. They all looked like their souls were crushed.

I mean, being a corporate account wouldn't be that bad. No better or worse than an average desk job if you are an organized person.

I would hate being a personal accountant though. On the low-end you deal with people with no knowledge who just want their rebate (and can get irate about it). On the high end you look all day at books that show the kids of rich people blowing more on toys in a year then you will make in ten years. It would make me want to commit suicide.

A different viewpoint: you get an accounting degree because it serves as a good starting point for starting a business. you don't need to be an accountant.

Running a business is entirely different than being an artist. I mean the successful independents have to be both, but not everyone can or wants to run a business.

Then those people who can't or won't better have a skill someone else is willing to pay for.

Not really. Wife has a BA in Art History and regrets it. She went to grad school for physical therapy and is much happier with that decision.

yes, all of my guy friends regularly hang out and tell each other they made poor decisions with their lives and flaunt the fact that they are better than everyone else whenever possible.

Either half of you are antisocial pricks with 2 prick friends whom no one else likes, or completely friendless and bitter about it (guessing the latter!)

Real Men don't make jabs like that, unless Alkymest is your best bud.

OP ASKED A GIFT SUGGESTION!

He didn't ask for you fucking dweebs to tell the guy that his life is shit and he should reconsider the choices he made.

fuck, most of you can't read more than 5 pages in a a book that isn't about hobbits or dragons, or sit through a movie that isn't about cartoon robots punching buildings. Expanding your horizons outside of your dork cubes at your soul-crushing jobs might improve your perspective and make you happier, rather than be dickholes to people you don't know.

ffs people.
