I failed my PRT / PFA on Thursday. 450-yard swim in 12 minutes. What would be the most efficient stroke to use for this?

Daaamn! How the f*ck did you manage that? I f*ckin' suck at freestyle, and I still did 500 yards in under 8 minutes---as a freshman even.

(Breaststroke FTW!)

You sound like a swimmer. Guess what, I'm not. Unfortunately, I fvcked up my knee, so running isn't an option now.

just use breaststroke.. if you can do it decently fast then you will outpace yourself doing freestyle within 100-200m.. freestyle is a fast stroke, but tiring.. when i was getting my lifesaving medals & NLS i always just did breaststroke for the whole distance..

well, as joinT said, freestyle is the fastest, and i usually swim only that, but it is tiring. breast stroke is slower, but less tiring and for distances, breast stroke would probablly be bette.

If you've got lots of time, go sidestroke. It's very slow, but even less tiring that breaststroke.

freestyle is definitely the fastest.

breaststroke is not the most efficient stroke for competitive swimmers.

However, for you, I would recommend maybe a combination of freestyle and double arm backstroke with breaststroke kick for rest. Though if you messed up your knee, maybe sticking with freestyle and backstroke would be best for you. Backstroke should be relatively easy depending on how comfortable you are on your back.

I suck at swimming and hate swimming.

I just like to wade in the shallow end or be on a raft.

I do however, like oceans

Butterfly stroke FTW...jk

Probably a combination of Freestyle and Breaststroke. I wouldn't go to backstroke or a sidestroke/scissor kick unless you are REALLY tired. Just practice and get up some endurance. Also make sure your form is right. Breaststroke isn't NEARLY as effective if your toes point inward or you scissorkick instead of the proper (I dont know the name) kick.

Freestyle is the fastest. I was in the Turkish National Youth under 16 team for 3 years.

My best are 0.54.89 on Freestyle 100 and 2.18.71 on Freestyle 200. Never did 400. I did 59.00 exact on Butterfly 100. I am probably around 1:10 on Freestyle 100 at the moment, and about 1:20 on Butterfly 100.

Swimming is the best sport ever after soccer

Butterfly is my favorite among them all, I swam Butterfly 100 for 8 years, 3 of it in the Turkish national team (U16 - see above post) and once you master Butterfly, its the most challenging, but rewarding style. You feel every muscle in your body pump up. Its amazing.

I was under the impression that freestyle means that you can do any stroke you want. Isn't it more accurate to say front crawl?

Technically, yes, with freestyle you are allowed to do anything you want in a competition other than touch the bottom or pull on the lane rope without getting disqualified, but you obviously wouldn't do anything other than freestyle. Freestyle is the accepted term among swimmers for the "front crawl." I dare say that if you said front crawl around year-round swimmers, you'd get looked at funny.

What does "PRT / PFA" mean?

Crawl (properly, the "Australian crawl") is fastest and most efficient use of energy.

My swim coach predicted the butterfly might equal it someday.

"Freestyle" would mean you could do the crawl until you tire, then take a brief break by doing a different stroke that uses different muscles, perhaps breaststroke or sidestroke for a minute or so. Then return to crawl again to finish within your time limit.

PRT = physical readiness test (old term)
PFA = physical fitness assessment (new term)

It is a semi-annual test in which we have to touch our toes for one second, see how many pushups you can do in two minutes, and how many sit-ups you can do in two minutes. And then there is the cardio, either a 1.5 mile run, or you can do a 450-meter / 500-yard (or is it vice versa, not sure) swim.
