wattage of your amp/receiver and the efficiency of the speaker will determine how loud it gets.

Like spidey says, go out and listen

Do you have a budget in mind?

Maybe... go and listen to some.

Are you matching these with anything existing or are these going to be the whole system?

What sounds good to one person might not sound good to another.

There are a bunch of good speakers at that price point.

Try some PSB Alphas.

Or some Paradigm gear.

If you've checked the Wilson Audio link that someone posted ... it's a bit out of your price range.

If you can afford Wilson Audio gear then may I suggest auditioning some Krell or Mark Levinson as well?

To be quite honest I've heard some really good wall/ceiling speakers (as much as I dislike B&W they did well in this category) and other were complete crap. All at the same price point.

Listen to them first. Everybody's ears are different.

Well, you'll need a receiver or amp somewhere between your disc changer and the speakers.

The receiver will determine your DD/DTS capability.
You'll want a 5.1 or higher set to take advantage of a DD or DTS signal. You'll only get stereo from a regular CD though, which would only produce a signal for two speakers or two and a sub.

They might depending on the extent of their listening demo room area.

There's probably a few audio video stores in your area closer than you think. Check out your phonebook or try to find some authorized resellers of some different brands in your area.

inorder to get 5.1 and dts sounds, you'll a receiver inorder to get it? does the speaker need to be 5.1 compatible also or no?so even if you have a receiver setup, audio cd dont support these features, right? only DVD's?

The speakers are all pretty much the same. It doesn't know where the signal it's getting is coming from. You need a receiver to create a signal to send to each speaker.

You need a receiver anyway for unpowered speakers to work. You're not going to be able to hook up speakers right to a cd changer.

To get 5.1 you need 5 speakers, a sub, a receiver, and a source.

For a CD, it only has 2 channels of sound. It's best to listen to this in straight stereo and not mess with surround sound. Two fullrange speakers or two speakers and a sub will be best for music.

You can do surround sound from a stereo source, but it's like the receiver is making up what goes where (vocals to the center, etc).

Anyway, your budget is going to change a lot if you're getting 5 or 6 speakers vs 2. If it's for music you're better off spending it all on a higher quality 2.0 or 2.1 setup than a cheaper 5.1 setup.

so yo u're saying that if i hook up a 5.1 surround sound using cd music, the improvement over 2 speakers aren't taht great apart?

5.1 dolby is with 5 speakers. what about DTS, how does it work? heard thats better than 5.1 dolby.

Some people really like surround from music, some don't. Surround has a nice effect, but it's not what it was intended to sound like.

With only two in ceiling speakers I don't even know what it's going to sound like though.

Does this have to be in ceiling?

For normal regular speakers to get the most accurate sound you're going to just want two speakers for music (or two and a sub) so that you keep the original presentation as it should sound and you get a nice soundstage going in front of you when listening.

If you do have surround sound going from a stereo source it's going to be "fake" surround vs what DD or DTS would be. For a stereo source you're going to have options like Dolby Prologic II or DTS Neo:6 or 5 channel stereo... all of which are taking the original stereo track and manipulating it to play different parts off different speakers.
For someone who wants the true presentation of how it was intended, that's a bad thing.

I'm not really experienced with a stereo in ceiling setup though, so I don't know how that changes things.

DD or DTS can be played back on 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, etc. (the .1 part is a subwoofer)
DD and DTS on a DVD movie has a track for each speaker to play in the sound signal. The receiver isn't "faking" what goes to each speaker. What each speaker plays was decided and recorded when the movie was made.

DD and DTS are both going to sound good and which one is better depends on the mixing mostly.
Here's some info http://www.spannerworks.net/reference/10_1a.asp
If you have a choice between the two for a movie, DTS is usually the better bet.

the definition of surround is with 5 or more speaker right? doesnt matter if 5 of the speakers are $10 each or $1000 each, as long as it's coming from a 5.1 source disc and a 5.1 receiver, it's called surround? so there are no such thing as surround sound compatible speakers or not? haa, never really into audios until this very moment.

when are audio cd's gonna catch up with surround sound? audios cd are so outdated, it's been the same for atleast 20 years or so? as for movies, we are getting a new format within the year. blu-ray & HD-dvd. audio needs to change.
