It is just not practical. Even the Doom 3 benchmarks @ 1600 x 1200 on .AnAndTech show that there is no difference with an extra 128 Megs.
I can't even say it is because of bad marketing from the GPU makers. Since they keep their mouth shut about their product more or less all the time. It's mostly from people who think more is always better, but sometimes it is just more.
