Any bike weenies around?

This is my new build. It's based on this fantastic frame I found from an ebay seller who's shop is right around the corner from my school. It's so light you could literally toss the bike over your shoulder and carry it around if you needed to (and I've done it--many times). The build wasn't terribly difficult, but I had to do it in my dorm and didn't have any tools so it was a bit frustrating. It also needed a ton of tweaking because it was my first, and a lot of things weren't 100% installed correctly (oops!). Anyway it's finished now and there aren't any more parts falling off. I wish the weather was better so I could ride it, but it's snowing and freezing out.

I probably wouldn't recommend building your own bike as it would have been so much easier to just buy a bike from the store. In the end I ended up with a much better frame, but my components aren't nearly as good as what I could have gotten if I had bought something off the shelf. Still it's a good feeling after it's all finished--especially when you get complements from the ladies on your craftsmanship...

Specs:
Aluminum Dirt Research Frame
Crappy 'Ballistic' fork
Shimano Deore crankset
Surly Singulator
Aluminum riser bars
Aluminum seat post
Tektro rear brake

I'll take some pictures if it ever stops snowing, but I have some older shots I can put up in the meanwhile.

Edit: These pictures are from when I was building. They don't have the new seatpost (this one broke) or handlebars (these are rusty and shitty). Also I hadn't yet cut the fork so it wasn't really attached properly.

Ya, me too. That's hot. Hope I can pick up a ZZR250 within the year.

To me, a peddle bike is a peddle bike cause I don't know much. My el-cheapo MTB is pretty nice on the roads. Great fun.

Rock on, warmodder. Building a bike is awesome. Pretty soon, all your spare time will be spent riding, going on mountain biking trips, and talking about riding and bikes, and all your cash will disappear to upgrades.

If that fork really sucks, you may want to get a cheap rigid fork. On my SS I find that for technical trails I actually like the rigid fork better than my suspension fork.

I built this up myself. It is a 2000 LeMond Zurich (Reynolds 853 steel frame) and I built it up with a Campy Chorus 9spd group. The wheels are Record hubs laced to Mavic Open Pro wheels. I found a mint Record Titanium seatpost an have a Fizik Arione saddle on it. It weighs about 19lbs. I only have about 1,500 miles on it because I pretty much ride my other bike almost exclusively.

My other bike.

Yea you're not kidding about being a money pit. My budget was blown many times over finishing this project. The little things really add up faster than you might think!

 I didn't even look at the pics. Makes you wonder how well the rest of the bike is put together.

BWAHAHAHA!!! I didn't even look at the pics. Makes you wonder how well the rest of the bike is put together.

I don't want to make fun, but I see little about the build that suggests the bike isn't a real safety hazard.

Yeah, I don't like where the OP states he didn't have any tools. You cannot possibly build a bike up properly without any tools.

Bare minimum you'd need is a set of metric allen wrenches, various screw drivers, something to cut cables with, a cassette tool, a chain whip, a chain tool, and various metric wrenches. I built my bike up with those tools but didn't feel comfortable installing the headset or the bottom bracket so I had those done at my trustworthy LBS (the bottom bracket requires special tools as well that I don't own).

A bike stand is also something I think is almost totally necessary for building up a bike. I guess you could rig something up but a decent bike stand is worth the money IMO...I do have one.

Haha, you're right. These pics were shot while I was building it. It's all been fixed now. By no tools I meant no specialty bike tools. I had a selection of normal handyman type tools. The bottom bracket was the only part I needed to get installed for me.

Apart from the pedal reflectors and the girls seat, looks like a good bike to zip around town in.

This is the monster my old lady paid over 3000 dollars for... (all carbon, with upgraded components, it's just sick)

(Mine is just a $500ish Giant Boulder SE)

my winter bike after a cross-town trip in a snowstorm Nothing fancy, just an old steel Gary Fisher hardtail plastered with reflective tape, plus a nice light system and some special winterization tweaks. Fully loaded for 40~80-mile winter excursions, it's about 50-55 pounds.

YouTube clip of some of our winter riding conditions here

I also have a decent road bike (Ultegra-equipped Paramount 853 steel) and a decent off-road bike (custom Stumpjumper hardtail). Their time will come, once the snow melts.
