Any blacksmiths out there?

I have signed up to take a begining blacksmith class in a couple weeks and was curious is there are any blacksmiths around here.

I just finished cobbler school - have not taken blacksmithing yet.

That's something I always wanted to do, but never have. You can make pretty good money smithing, but it's a tiny niche you'd be getting into.

I dont plan on makign money off of it, just always wanted to learn it as well. My great great grandfather was a blacksmith and I have his anvil. Thought I mgiht as well put it to good use. Maybe if I get good at it and someone wants something interesting, but mostly I will be making things for the family.

yeah i have blacksmithing maxed out (475!). though don't do it its a money sink and the recipes suck.

I don't know where you live, but if you're anywhere near Amish country, you may be able to find tools in local antique shops. If the drive is an hour or less, it would be worth making a road trip to see. Even if you come back empty handed, you've spent a day driving through nice country.

you have a "farm implement store" (something like farm and fleet) around you? the ones near me have a small selection of blacksmiths tools

Cool, I've thought about trying something like that, mostly just becuse I like fire, and think a foundry would be neat to build, but, I hate hot temperatures, and I think I would only use it in like January and Feburary when there's snow on the ground...

Well I am down in Louisiana, so the Amish county drive would be a bit logn for me. Althouhg I would like to tkae a trip up there at some point.

Good idea about the farm store. I have a few freinds that farm rice. I am sure they have a good store to go to somewhere.

You mean a straight peen hammer, cross peen hammers are to be found in most hardware stores.

I took a class at my high school. Hammered a piece of iron from the forge incorrectly and a small fragment flew out into my knee. Great times (seriously).
