my ideal setup is having a home gym + a gym membership. depending on what my routine is sometimes i'm in the gym 5 - 6 times a week. with a home gym I can wake up at 4pm hung over on the weekend and still have time to work out after i eat some pho or drink some more. or i can go put in 200 miles on the motorcycle and come back home to workout.

what's even better is a home gym, a regular gym, and work gym. we have a fitness center on site but they're not open on the weekends. that's a good setup because you can either lift or take a cardio class during lunch. shower and go back to work. you also have a gym available on the weekends. you also can lift at 3am after power hour at union jacks or whatever.

so yeah i think bowflex is not bad. [edit] a friend of mine had one. worked pretty good

I couldn't do P90X. That program is for people that are already in great shape and want to get ripped.

QFT...it's sad those doing the program and just lying about what they are capable of. Like the dude 50+lbs overweight claiming he can knock off 20 pullups after a week in one of the offices I was at.

Bowflex is either you love it or hate it. They are good machines, but there are also 'cheapies' in the lineup. For a lot of people they turn into another place to hang clothes from, just like a gym membership though that someone only uses the first 2-3 months then forgets about.

If you have the space and dig the concept, it's a good system especially for condos/apartments where a half a ton of weights may not be practical.

If you have a ground unit and the space I really prefer a nice set of dumbbells, an Olympic set of plates/bar and a cage type bench with pull up bars and safeties. If your room is narrow they make narrower bars as well.

I have the bowflex dumbells and bench. I have owned a bowflex knock off.

Couple of things about the dumbbells. They are wayyy wide. so its much more awkward to do the normal dumbbell things. I actually still use them because they are so versatile tho. However i have started purchasing real dumbbells. The bench is decent. the seat is too wide tho imho.

the knockoff...i will say i liked when i was uneducated. now, i would never advise one. dumbells and barbells are much better.

JM, for your goals, do starting stength or strong lifts. And eat more cals than you need to in order to gain a little weight.

If you have no room for an Oly set, join a gym that has free weights.

anytime fitness membership 36.99 - 20 (insurance credit) = 16.99/month
dumbbells go to 150. two squat racks, a sled, a bench and a bunch of 45's.

what more do you need, and how much cheaper do you want it?

my workout recommendation = AST's MAX-OT
