Any clues as to when a new generation of graphic cards will be out?

I have been waiting a while for a new generation of graphic cards to come out... but it doesn't seem like we've had anything really new for a while... I want to build a new computer but I'd rather get the last generation way cheaper(when a new one comes out) or just get one of the newer ones. Any ideas?

There are plenty of cards for every price level. I can't remember a better time to buy a gpu actually. Amd and nvidia both have very good options and at excellent prices to boot. I think I read recently that new 560's were going for $150.

Septerber-Oktober for AMD (this year).

2012 early for Nvidia (next year).

That's a negatory. I just checked 560 Ti prices the other day on Newegg and I couldn't find any under $200.

I think it was the 560 non ti version. I didn't really look since I've got a 580 already anyways. Even at $200 the 560 ti is a deal. I don't remember there ever being a $200 card that could run any high end game at nearly maxed out settings.

It's because there hasn't been a time when game development has stagnated the way it has recently. All games are designed for 6 year old hardware, and it shows.

the biggest issue was the failure of TSMC and the FabCo (former AMD fabs) to successfully make 32nm processor. Intel made one but kept it for their CPUs.
This means that GPUs have been stuck at 40nm for a long time. There have definitely been improvement but the cancellation of the original 32nm processes from the above 2 companies was crippling for the past 2 years or so.

We are about to get 28 nm chips soon though.

Also, the 8800GT, GTX260 and 460 were able to run games maxed out for the same reason.

GPU's have been pretty cheap for a long time now because of how slow graphic advancement has been.

+3 Just look at Duke Nukem... what a joke in terms of graphics

I got 2x GTX470s for $190 a piece last June. So a $200 GTX560 ti 12 months later (that's 5% faster) is nothing special.

The other day an open box HD6990 was going for $521 on Newegg. Now that's a deal.

HD7000 series is supposed to launch this fall / before end of year. Kepler is likely delayed into Q1 2012.

Yup everyone's been playing MMORPG's, console ports (if they bother porting) and smaller indie type games because there's little anything else specifically designed to push the hardware. Guess we'll have to wait for 2012 for the new-gen consoles to raise the bar for games gfx. We need another Crysis or something to push the envelop and wow us with next generation visuals.

Sad thing is that even Skyrim is affected by this direction... Sigh.

Speaking of game development stagnation wouldn't it be easier to develop for high-end hardware and scale back accordingly depending on needs? Or are the console architectures that different that they can't do that? Or is there some other obvious reason I'm not seeing?

even if the 7xxx series do release this fall, it'll be a while until the higher end 7xxx series comes out, which are the cards you want. expect for next year

I finally played Crysis 1 on good hardware this month.

It looks amazing! Pisses me off that we can't see such quality in all games.

Anyways - back to the topic - people say that the next generation AMD cards are coming out this fall, and given the huge process jump, it would be retarded to not wait if that were true.

*waiting for the day when Crysis 1 can be played on a macbook air or ultrabook*

From AMD's earnings conference call:
• We passed several critical milestones in the second quarter as we prepare our next-generation 28nm graphics family and remain on track to deliver the first members of what we expect will be another industry-leading GPU family to market later this year.

Not to derail the thread or anything, but are the sales available yet?

edit: never mind, I found it.

Why does everybody think that hd 7000 is coming out this fall? Just b/c of that BSN article the other day? Neither side is going to bring out a 3rd high end line of cards on 40 nm, and I just don't see how either TSMC or GF are getting them to 28nm in time for BF. I hate to be negative, but I think that 2q 2012 is the most likely release date.

Next gen consoles can't get here quickly enough, maybe once those come out we'll get some new/more demanding games and cards to go with them.

edit: from reading the AMD conference call notes, that just reinforces my thoughts. Both camps like to bring out new processes with low/mid range cards, so maybe we'll have a 5770 or 6670 replacement before year end at least, but don't get too excited about a high end card this year.

What do you have now? Will it suffice for a few more months? Or, do you need something right now to give you acceptable performance? That's what would be the deciding factor for me.

Also, you mention this being a new build. With BD looming on the horizon it might be worth waiting to see what it brings as well before deciding on a new computer. It's not just all about the GPU.
