I think we, as a society, should really start looking at ways to cut subscriptions where we can so we're not billed for what we don't use. I was upset because my ISP raised my rate $20/month to $65 from $45 and I couldn't justify the difference based on my usage.

I dropped DirectTV because I watch local channels more than premium channels. It didn't make sense since I am asleep 8 hours, at work 8 hours....and busy another 6+ hours daily. Why pay $3 for less than 2 hours of entertainment daily? Even worse that I don't care about anything on TV. Btw.....HD broadcast is pretty awesome. Quality is just as good as cable/satellite with the right antenna.

It's gonna be a while before I pay for those services.
Quality of OTA broadcasts should be better than cable/satellite because those services must rely on compression to fit all the bandwith in their system.

I agree....but interference and signal strength is a real issue. I have a lot of SD channels maybe 50 miles away that aren't great. I also have a mixed bag of coax in my house and 50+ foot lengths to reach my 4 TVs....it results in some scans missing channels.

"Double dipping" should be illegal. The whole idea of PAYING for a service, is that you don't have to put up with commercials. They're getting money from us, and getting money from advertisers. That's why so much research is going into ad blocking.

It's obvious with OTA, you tolerate the commercials for free shit.

Subscription services should not be allowed to advertise.

The only one that shows any kind integrity is Sirius-XM.

100% commercial free radio, which is why when I want to listen to music I can stream it on my Roku.

As a LOL way back in the late '70's, (yea, I'm that old), cable TV was just emerging and promised no ad's, it quickly became a joke though as broadcasters did not get the expected revenue from having their shows on cable.

Have you considered an amplifier located at the antennae?, it might boost your strength enough to overcome some issues.

Sadly my wife is impaired when it comes to tech. I may try again after we move, but for now Directv is my savor.
I did drop the Sunday ticket though, so that's a start.

No idea why we don't at this point. We really only showed up to TV for the live local sports events but it turns out we really only ever watch during the playoffs and sometimes only during the Finals.

Disney channel is the only other thing tying us down, but with their own streaming service coming *shrug* still cheaper to have 3 streaming services and Cable only than cable +TV + 2 streaming services.

We watch so little TV that when we do, my youngest child gets angry when a commercial ends "because he wanted to keep watching that show"

Man it's a different world now.
You might be interested in a deal Disney is offering. $4/month for a three year subscription to Disney+ if you are in the Disney fan club (which is apparently free). It does include ads, though.

Has ads in Disney+ been confirmed? I know the discounted bundle with Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu included ads specifically on Hulu. I just got the "$140 for 3 years of Disney+" deal the other day, hope I didn't lock myself into years of ads lol.

OTA here coupled with a Channel Master DVR+ which is awesome. It makes having OTA so much better. We also have Netflix and Prime Video to supplement. I'm also a football fan so from September to January I reinstate my Sling subscription.
Netflix is getting up there in price at $11/month so we are thinking about cancelling it. Prime is harder to quantify because of the Prime shipping. Last year we had 107 orders on Amazon most of them were Prime eligible. This year we are at 77 orders and most of them were Prime eligible. As you can see it seems to work out.
The $25/month Sling charge is a guilty pleasure... I like football and it's the only option right now that lets me watch both pro and college without a long term commitment.

I also saw the Disney deal and am considering it over Netflix. The price is right but if it has ads I might reconsider depending on how often the ads air. Can any one confirm that the Disney+ service does have ads?

No, I don't see ads in the announcement. I may have read mention of the bundle with Hulu and conflated them.

Their music stations yes, talk stations (including comedy) generally no.

I was so excited when they added their app to work on Android Auto and Fire TV.

I cut home internet in 2015 to save $65/month. I cut DirectTV in 2017 to save $115/month. I bought an external HD antenna and use my hotspot on my cellphone (50GB/month) to update my Xboxes and stream movies.

My monthly expenses are $105 for 2 unlimited cellphones....which my wife is reimbursed $70 for....

We have 2 kids and they mostly watched DVR recordings.....now DVDs... I hate spending money on TV and internet.subscriptions because we're so active and don't use it enough.
Don't forget the library typically has a DVD collection

Yes. We do this. My kids are ok with it, but many of the DVDs from the library are scratched...it results in them getting upset. I never dealt with scratched media much before dealing with the library and kids....it makes sense why some people prefer streaming...even when they purchase titles. I was always a fan of collecting the discs so we could take them with us in our van.

Mean to tell you!

I was "old school" I started my library in the days of the H DirectTv card. At one point, I got 732 local channels, all the HBOs, ShowTimes, CineMaxes, PPVs, and even the Playboy, Spice, and Adam and Eve channels! I belonged to an IRC group that wrote the code to open the cards back in the day..

My girlfriend once said: "Why do you need 900 channels? You can't watch all of that!"

My reply was: "When you walk in the door, and I'm working, you can never say "there's not anything I want to see on TV." If you look long enough, you will find something you want to watch, and leave me alone to work."

I currently have about 1500 titles plus in my DVD library. And still adding more.

Apparently I can't attach PDF files of this size.
