Just wondering how you feel about Global Offensive, your play time, how far you have made it up the ranks, and well just general thoughts?

I started out as a Silver II playing on a very low end laptop, but am now MG1 but deranked from MG2 in 222 wins.

I love the competitive side of CS and how rewarding it is to go up the rank ladder, there is no other game out there that gives you such a rewarding feel in my opinion, you have to devote total mind and control to this game to succeed.

I've been playing CS since Beta 4, November 1999, pretty much continuously; never more than a couple months away from the game. GO is, in my opinion, the single worst release in the history of CS (yes, even worse than Condition Zero, or the first two weeks of Beta 6 where bullets landed exactly 10 pixels right of the crosshair). I can't stand a single thing about it. I still play Source, but as soon as that community dries up, I think I'll be done with CS until whatever comes out to replace GO. I think the developers were so focused on trying to emulate other popular games (like COD or Battlefield) that they forgot what makes CS great is that it isn't just some nondescript military FPS.

What's the real reason you dislike GO? i mean have you played it recently?

I have like 250 hours logged into Global Offensive. It's basically Counter Strike. Tiny differences that can't be noticed unless you're really hardcore.

I like it. I have fun every week. And gain money while doing it.

I haven't played it since February. And I was really trying to get into it back at the start of the year, since most of the gaming group I play with is transitioning to GO. But there are just too many things that make it annoying.

First off, it's really not set up well for pubbing. I can appreciate why they went to a proper scrim mode, and I actually like that feature when it works, but for random matchmaking, it sucks. And if you stick it in casual, you lose half the audience we normally cater to. So right off the bat, there's a big rift between people who want a traditional "jump in and play whenever" pub mentality and the more dedicated who will set aside 40 minutes for a proper scrim. From a server admin standpoint, that rift is hard to overcome.

Second, the guns feel absolutely terrible. I remember the change from 1.6 to Source; the recoil pattern was different on basically everything, quickscoping was neutered, you couldn't fire through most materials anymore; it just felt wrong. That's basically how it is with CS Source to CS GO; every weapon characteristic is different. The thing is, when Source came out, I was in college, and I had plenty of time to train myself to use the guns again. I'm married with a kid now. I don't have the time to spend relearning how to use guns I've grown comfortable with over the last decade.

Third, I hate the new look. They've dialed up the gray/brown look that makes COD and Battlefield look the same, and in doing so, they've lost any trace of what makes CS feel unique. Oh, a gritty shooter that looks just like every other gritty shooter on the market? Hooray.

Fourth, I haven't found a single server that feels right as far as registration. Now part of this is because the weapons feel different, as mentioned above. But I've been playing plenty long to know when an AWP shot should connect, like when I'm crouched perfectly still firing at a stationary target, and I still get bullets that fail to register in those situations. I don't want to play a game where a random number generator determines my accuracy, where shoddy netcode prevents clear hits from registering. And I also don't want to play a game where I clearly aim my flickshot into the floor like an idiot and manage to score a bogus headshot; I want to feel like I'm rewarded for skill, not dumb luck.

So, yeah. I don't feel like there's a proper hangout I can go to, I can't play with the same group of people like I can in Source, I don't have the time to dedicate to a scrim given parental responsibilities and needing to leave on a whim, I hate the feel of every single gun, I hate the netcode, I hate the look... That's pretty much where I stand on GO.

I'm not into it. My son was telling me the other night about his buddy who plays on the pro circuit tho. Used to play Halo/Halo 2 with him back in the day. Don't remember him mentioning his name tho. Something about his team winning like 13 of 14 tournaments. Not even sure if guy lives in USA. Maybe I'll ask his name and update post.

I've probably logged a few hundred hours in it. FWIW I like GO, but I don't really see a lot of difference from plain ol' Source and I don't think I ever played 1.6. Almost all my time is playing with bots though, 'cause I'm old and slow and I play at odd and irregular times.

I just played GO for about 20 minutes; good lord, hard to imagine a more boring game. Painfully dull.

CS is one of those games where skill is really just a fraction of what is required to win, if you look at the top end players they're doing stuff like learning where to throw flashbangs in the environment by lining up geometry to get perfect flashes on people rushing in, it just requires watching endless youtube videos of everyone doing the same thing and then learning the endless counter tactics. People learn the recoil and make crosshairs the exact size of the vertical recoil so they know where to shoot after they've reached max vert recoil.

It's all that kind of lame stuff that take CS out of a competative game and just make it a boring monatmous meta game to me, sure some people love pwning newbs with those super 1337 tactics, but very little of what they're doing in on-demand and context sensitive skill, not like the old school shooters like quake/UT which required mostly quick reflexes and a good aim and being able navigate the map no matter which way you were looking.

The vast majority of CS skill comes basically from memory of patterns and memory of behaviour in maps, rush A on map X and they'll be there at this corner so keep your crosshair here and boink the first person in the head to run past, that kinda thing. It's just not what I'd classicly define as skill, a huge number of the players also runs scrips and keybinds to facilitate bunny hopping and quick scoping and all sorts of nonsense, this never happened back in the day.

Quick scoping is not really a thing especially after the AWP was patched.

Scripted Bunny hop is illegal in MM and if someone reports the offender, overwatch can tick the box for outside assistance.

Also good luck doing well in CS with what you call the ways to play CS

What the hell is up with this stupid rank thing. I've been playing for years and now they want me to hit rank 3 to get competitive matches? You gain XP extremely slow and you have to finish an entire match to even get your points.

spent most of my day today playing Quake ... when not quake, i'm on Blacklight - which has a fixed recoil pattern similar to CS.

thing is, CS doesn't have much depth. the snipers take skill, and you need quick reflexes, but that's pretty much it.

with its rounds structure and no health recovery (and no vertical play to speak of) you are pretty much limited to knowing where the bad guys are and quickly doing your mouse twists in the shape of the recoil pattern.

still, i'm thinking that maybe i should invest some time in it. after playing FSP games nonstop for 7 years, i think i should be able to make a decent living out of the skin drops. or, at least, buff my meager call center wages.
