Any CRT monitor out there that provides 24 inch viewable space?

That way you can have the advantage of both worlds. I know it won't be a LCD the CRT so its going to be huge and heavy no matter what. Though being able to have a 24 inch viewable area on a CRT monitor would be just as large as any 24 inch LCD monitor but with a lot better quality if its like a Sony FW900 or better! Not sure if they even make CRT monitors this big.

If there is one that would pretty much swollow your entire desk. I don't think a lot of the cheaper computer desks will even support the weight of it.

I actually think there were some 26" and up floating around at one time, but these
were never consumer based models, but the FW900 without a doubt is pretty darn big.

I think those are just rebadges of the Sony and Mitsu models. As far as I know, the FW900 was the largest computer CRT made and its actual viewable area is 22.5". There are some special ones made for medical imaging that tend to have extremely high resolutions, but those are usually grayscale.

HP also rebadged the FW900 and called it the A7217A. So that's another model number you can use if you're searching for one. I love mine and am not trading it in until something comes along that is better overall.

Actually MAC doesn't rebadge. I was wrong, it was the "Stuio Display" not Cinema ( those are LCD's ). And they go up to 21" but are still prob the best CRT's ever made.

How does that beige bezel/housing look? AcurateIT.com has both the sony and the A7217A with a 12 months warranty. $499 for the A7217A, $699 for the GDM-FW900. I know, seems like a no brainer, but my wife and I are both anal as they come and big on aesthetics. On top of that, we actually budgeted (and have saved) way more than $699 for a display setup (we were originally intending on the 37" westy, but as my recent topic states, I'm not ready for LCD yet, not by a long shot).

So, is it a, I've been sitting in a 30 years smokers office all my life, beige? Or just a little off white (can't really tell from photos)?

I've had 7 FW900's, I'm currently at 0. I sold the last two when I moved cross country & won't be getting any more.

The quality varies a lot, & they're all just getting too old to be viable at $500+ price points.

I'm currently using three 21" Trinitrons (P1110's), I have an average of $110 or so apiece into them. They all calibrate quite nicely using a colorimeter, average dE is 0.4-0.5 or less. I have more desktop space than I had with the two FW900's, & far less money tied up.

The FW900's are nice, but there's no way they're worth $500 much less $700.

$250 for a good one could be worthwhile, but you can get brand new 22" LCD's for under $200. Granted they're 6-bit, won't be as accurate, etc. but you can't beat the price.

If you're willing and able to spend $500+ there are better options.

$500+ for a single display CRT setup; what are the better options?

(cliff notes on my recent topic: finally switched to LCD, hated it, CRT only for me for a long time to come)

It's a regular PC beige. The color doesn't matter to me. I'm too absorbed in what's on the screen to notice what color the case is.

The ability to run various resolutions/refresh rates without losing clarity from "native" resolutions, no backlight bleeding, no dead/stuck pixels, no ghosting, great black levels and a ton of screen settings/adjustments is what is keeping me from going to LCD.

When LCDs surpass my A7217A, then I'll make the switch. But they haven't gotten there yet.

I used to be a CRT-lover, until the practical necessity of limited space in the household forced me to switch to LCD and sell off my CRT. So sad. I used to have a 19" MAG multi-sync, and two Sony GDM-1961 20" fixed-freq tubes, all hooked up together in grand multi-display glory. Those days are now gone.

On the bright side, my UPS can now hold up my rigs a lot longer, with LCD displays rather than CRTs.

What about the pc room's temperature ? Has it made as huge difference or is the pc tower the main cause of a hot pc room during the summer time ?

There are three to choose from:

Sony GDM-W900 (Great monitor, can be found for cheap)

Sony GDM-FW900 Awesome Monitor, costs much more than its older brother, the GDM-W900.

Sun, HP, DELL, IBM GDM-FW9012: This Sony Manufactured monitor is the same as the GDM-FW900 except for the brand label on top and the lack of BNC inputs but in liu of them you do get a second HD15 VGA connection for your XBOX or laptop. The SUN version comes with one HD15 and an even better 13w3 connection (if you can support it). A 13w3 adapter (sun part number 530-2917-01) can be found easily for a few $$. The advantage to the FW9012 is that it's identical to the FW900 but is much cheaper to buy on the second hand market. The 9012 is my recommendation.

The only close alternative to the Sony models listed above is a $4,000 Mitsubishi Diamondtron. This monitor truely is the last of the Mohican's. It's high quality and low production numbers ensure a hefty price tag. If they would only produce it in larger numbers, Mitsubishi could have a potential market monopoly.

Actually, if you do some googling, you'll find several links that claim that Apple DOES rebadge, and those monitors are NEC/Mitsubishi rebadges. Still nice monitors, though.

I'm using a sony trinitron 21" and it probably weighs 100lbs.
Still I love it.
I work in graphics and its a great monitor for true blacks, etc.

I've seen a 24" crt and while its nice, I don't have the desktop for it.

About 100lbs and my back is sore from lifting it.
