My little male goes up and down the stairs no problems. He stumbles once in a while but it doesn't seem to bother him. The female on the other hand will stand at the top of the stairs, whines and howls until somebody goes up the stairs and stands beside her. It seems that she need somebody beside her to gather up the courage to go downstairs. LOL

Going down stairs and jumping down put the most pressure on the back of Doxies. Mine will go up stairs but I've trained him not to come down them. So, when I come home from work, I'll hear him whining upstairs b/c he went up there during the day and now wants me to bring him downstairs.

I own a miniature dachshund through inheritance of a sort when I married my wife. I love dog, but I tend to dislike most smaller ones for their tendency to viciously bark, snap, and bite. Hers is no different in that regard. Hers has no back problems but has a few other health issues. Small dogs live longer than large ones and I've found develop health issues that cost more as they take longer to die once they develop issues.

Now while I really don't like my dachshund, I've met a few nice ones. The neighbor up the street has a great full size puppy one. It barked at me a bit the first time it saw me, but then was lovey dovey when I started petting it. That would be a dachshund I could deal with. But as a breed that is not the natural tendency of the dog line. They are bred to be small fearless hunting dogs that go after prey in tunnels. They really do not know they are smaller than whatever it is they are going after. Which means they can have temperament problems.

If you get one, get one early and socialize it well, OR get a slightly older one that you know is very socialized.

This is usually just due to bad owners allowing them to get away with crap a large dog would be taught not to do. But, since you can just pick them up and put them in your purse, it's cute when they snap at people or other dogs.

I very much hate small dogs and it is entirely due to their owners.

We have one. No back issues, can easily go up and down stairs. But, he does bark at everything and sometimes nothing at all. Also, will have seizures, particularly if he's over-excited. Have read it's common with Dachsunds.

I hear ya man. We have three dogs. I'm dreading when they have health issues, which always eventually comes. My wife will be devastated. She loves these little bastards.

Uh yea I've been down that road 3 times now through life and I'm done with it.

Dachshunds are probably the worst breed I've ever owned. The difficulty in training is pretty bad, they dig at blankets and such. Bark at everything (And often times nothing).

One of my dogs is a Dachshund/Chihuahua, OR Dachshund/Toy Terrier which is great. One of the best dogs I've had. Vet asked what we feed her because it has one of the best coats shes seen and all we feed her is beneful . Its 100% good genetics on that dog. Easy to train, well behaved, everything.

You need consistent training on the pure Dachshund which I just don't have here. "Why are you letting it bark its annoying" etc. IF you aren't consistent the dog will literally just do what it wants.

Small hunting dogs tend to want to be alphas very quickly. Especially if their owners baby them. Single owners that don't socialize small hunting dogs and baby them end up with tiny terrors that think the owners are their pet and not the other way around.
