I buy Sun laundry detergent and it works great. Probably best kept secret out there. Girlfriend is allergic to most brands and she has no problem with Sun. She has always bought tide and is not opposed to switching to Sun.

I use Sears brand laundry soap. It's better than those perfumed ones like Tide and costs much much less
Just about every brand to include Tide has a scentless dye-less version of their soap.

Tide is good. there are less expensive options that are just about as good though

I agree with most of the above options.

for decent quality inexpensive Vodka try Sobieski's to me it is on a par with more well known brands that hover around the $20-25 price point while costing 40-50% less depending on the stores near you.

Toiletries and laundry detergent. If I had to drink Jim Beam... :awe: or use an off brand coffee, so be it.

Trash bags (I only buy the flex kind, too many broken regular bags to ever go back)

Ziploc bags (I only buy the kind with the actual zipper because I don't have the patience for the press-to-seal bags)

Although Ziploc has a new bag I just tried that has an easy-open tab; it's the only ziploc bag I've ever used where the press-to-seal function actually works on the first try:

https://ziploc.com/en/products/bags/freezer/freezer-bags-gallon-large (edit: whoaaaaaa bad reviews!)

Now featuring our Easy Open Tabs. Protect your food with Ziploc® brand Freezer Bags. Each bag locks out freezer burn while keeping food fresh and full of taste. Less freezer burn means less wasted food and money. Plus, these tough, durable bags feature our Smart Zip Plus® seal—it lets you feel, hear and see the bag close from edge-to-edge, so you can feel confident your food is protected from freezer burn.

Yes, I get excited about plastic bags #teamlifehacker

I was shopping for garbage bags last weekend and was briefly tempted to buy the cheapo no name brand, of course it reminded me of your post.

Haha! I got this beast for my kitchen:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058SORJO

It's 17 gallons, which is a nice size up from the standard 13-or-so gallon trash cans, plus it has wheels for mobility (roll it over to where you're working in the kitchen) & a lid so your family can't do the leaning tower of pisa with trash. I don't recommend installing the handles, as the screws inside snag the trash bags & rip them. I do, however, recommend getting oversized 30-gallon trash bags like this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AQIULD2

$15.30 shipped for a 50-pack of flexible trash bags. My family tends to stuff the trash can full like it's a manual trash compactor, then I can't easily wrap up the trash bag to take outside because it's overflowing. So instead, I get oversized bags to work around this issue (that, plus the lid on the trash can helps to prevent overflow...I replaced all of the rest of the trash cans with these automated puppies that also have lids). I did the same thing when I bought my last dryer...I think my washing machine is like a 5cf model, whereas the Black Friday special I replaced the dryer with is over 8cf iirc, so they can overstuff the washing machine all they want, but it will still dry in normal time (under an hour, yay!) instead of having to run it 2 or 3 times to get everything dry. I can't fix other people's habits, but I can compensate in other ways lol.

Shaving razors. Gillette mach whatevers or nothing. They are expensive as hell but nothing else comes close. And I'd rather pay a few bucks per razor than cut my face to ribbons.

Not every single day but you can't substitute Hellman's Mayonnaise. Don't do it.

Lots of talk about garbage bags. Even for the kitchen, we just use the grocery store plastic bags. One in the Simple Human can (sized to fit them) and one bag for paper goods trash like magazines, ads, mail, and school papers up on the counter. Does the job for free for a family of 4 daily which is really just garbage generated from cooking and eating dinner. Big trash bags seem like a waste since they hardly get filled up but have to be replaced nightly.

In no particular order...

  • Cell Phone - I always buy a premium phone every year or so.
  • Internet connection - High bandwidth, not the cheap service.
  • Toothpaste - Sensodyne. Works for me.
  • Dish washer detergent - I have a Bosch dishwasher and it's picky about what it uses, but it's sooooo worth it.
  • Laptop - it's how I make a living, so it's in my best interest to have something premium.
  • Air conditioner/HVAC - High efficiency, modular, repairable, reliable. This is extra important in Florida.
  • TP - If there isn't a fuzzy bear on it, I won't buy it.
  • Jewelry - I'm not a big jewelry person, but the little bit we do buy is very fine and very nice. I don't believe in cheap/crap jewelry, and she agrees.
  • Musical instruments - We're both musicians and we both agree; buy pro level equipment and nothing else. Sure, it's expensive, but you'll buy it once.
  • Food - We have expensive tastes and heightened, refined palates. It's a blessing and a curse.
  • Tires - It's your only connection to the road. Crap tires should lead to boring driving, or even death.

Mouthwash. Only use Listerine, even though it's 3-4x the price of many others. Probably also don't need 150/40 internet, or unlimited 4g+ mobile, which is sometimes faster than that (certainly don't seem to need both - could tether. latency is low too).

Trash bags I guess, and asswipe. Paper towels are just glorified napkins, they aren't made to clean up messes, so we buy the wal-mart 6 pack cheap rolls. Food stuff I generally don't buy generic, except for cereal for the child it's all sugar coated who gives a fuck anyway. I wish I could get cheaper internet. I follow along with the cheapest MVNO I can get (without pain being involved like using T-Mobile or Sprint). I generally buy the "Can't believe this phone is under $200" phone every other year or so, or a lightly used former flagship, $250 is my absolute top I'll pay for a phone.

I wouldn't say I'm "cheap" but I dont' have expensive tastes either.

Given today's rampant consumerism, I suspect the items where people _do_ "cheap out" are far rarer. I'll bet many people never buy anything but name brand household products, with the decision making having nothing to do with quality in most cases.

Nein - dollar shave club does not offer a razor with a vibrating shave head. Once I tried the vibrating shave head that Gillette offers, I refuse to use anything else. Its amazing how such a simple modification makes such a huge difference.
