I'm a pretty cheap person for the most part. 2 things where it's not worth it.

Garbage bags. Laundry soap. Anything else I usually buy generic. What say you?

I buy Sun laundry detergent and it works great. Probably best kept secret out there. Girlfriend is allergic to most brands and she has no problem with Sun. She has always bought tide and is not opposed to switching to Sun.

Pretty much the same here.

Tide really DOES work better. The difference between Cascade and off-branch dishwasher soap is also night and day.

And good coffee is just... necessary.

I use Sears brand laundry soap. It's better than those perfumed ones like Tide and costs much much less. I think it cleans just fine, too and my wife agrees. Never any complaints about the soap.

likewise, Dawn's formulation is considered beyond comparison in their class of detergents.

We actually use it in "some" protocols in the molecular lab because it has weird protein-agitation properties or what not that no other cheap soap can match (compared to the shit that vendors charge for cheap soap, Dawn from Amazon, or Target, say, is basically the cheapest you can possibly buy).

It's also apparently way too harsh for some applications. Some grades of polystyrene seem to become brittle and crap out far faster through several washes with Dawn compared to other detergents.

Butter.
I dont care the brand, but I want the grass fed stuff .. its delicious. And I don't substitute with vegetable based oils or margarine. Give me butter dammit.

Yes, I use olive oil or Lard where applicable, but if Im having some toast or a slice of bakery bread of some sort, I want real butter.

I use that also. No particular reason aside from being cheap, and it works. I buy good-premium dish liquid. Not particular on the brand, but not generic.

Otherwise, I'm a fan of generics and small makers for food. They aren't all terrific, but some are better than the big names. I experiment, and pickup more if they're acceptable.

I don't generally cheap out on tools unless I assume they're disposable up front. Life's too short for the frustration of cheap(read Chinese) tools. I save money by buying used as much as possible.

O'RLY?

Have to agree with Vodka from Jules as well. Middle of the road Smirnoff will do.

as for Sun laundry detergent; never tried it. They don't sell it where I live.

Wow! Three people here have agreed with me today... I feel like stopping what I'm doing and writing down how I feel.
