Any decent games for Linux?

I'm wondering whether Linux has any decent games to play, as I only use my computer for games and internet browsing?

Will it run Crysis when it comes out or Supreme Commander?

If all you care about is gaming, then I wouldn't move to linux. Linux is great, but it's not as great as windows for out of box gaming imho.

Longer Anwser: Yes with Work + Time.

If you really want to dive into Linux and still play the newest games, dual-boot XP and your chosen distro.

The Yes anwsers refer to 3 projects. WINE, Cedega, and Codeweavers CrossOver.

All three of them are basically... a compatibility layer that allow you to use windows apps on Linux. Cedega is gaming oriented, and subscription based, Crossover is Office oriented and also comes at a cost. WINE is free.

And even then it's not a definite yes, I never did get CivIII to run acceptably in Linux.

I'd just dual-boot into WinXP. Linux has lousy gaming support - there's nothing to do about it.

On the other hand, they just ported the Baldur's Gate engine. Best game EVER.

To be pedantic the games are the ones with the lousy support, only supporting one OS is a pretty narrow view.

I did Deus EX 1 and 2 in Linux with wine, but required 2 hours for the Deus EX2.
Deus EX 1 is THE GAME. not for the graphics, but for the history itself. Much coherent.
The Deus EX 2 is graphically superior, but lost the climax of the Deus EX1.

And worse yet some are console only or even specific console only. I've got an XBox360 but I'm willing to admit that FPS's suck on a controller. Always have, always will.

Have you been in a local EB, Babbages, Gamestop, etc lately? The console games ring the entire store. PC games? Oh yeah, they're over on that small rack in the middle of the store.

Yep... Most of the modern games are Windows only. It's not just Linux support that's missing either. In most cases even the Mac camp gets left out. Can't really blame them though. Making games costs money and IMO it would cost more $$$ to develop for an additional platform than it would bring in return.

id seems to not have a problem producing Linux and OS X versions of their games. Granted I don't think their Linux version of Q3A sold well, but they kept it up so apparently the port wasn't much of a drain on them.

So, answering my original question based on your replies...no, there are not any decent games for Linux.

Depends on what you want, I get along with Linux games just fine.

Why not just dual boot Linux & Windows? The best of both worlds.

The only games I care about have linux ports. UT, doom3,quake 4, nwn, savage, x2, X3, ET, america's army, Darwinia, Alpha Centauri, etc. And with wine and cedega, I can play the other games I miss half life 2, counter strike, WoW, baulder's gate 2, C&C generals, Warcraft 2 and 3, City of Hero's, oblivion (although it looks much better on windows due to oldblivion) etc.

Gaming on linux is fine if you Don't want the latest and greatest game the day it comes out, and made hardware purchases with linux in mind (you have a nvidia video card). Now that Mac is on intel I expect to see its gaming situation to increase as well as wine targets in on mac.

Until recently they had native versions of AA for linux. But they seem to have discontinued it.

Just checked 2.5 is the last official version for linux and mac.
