Besides all the blockbusters (matrix, terminators, alien, etc..) are there any sci fi movies you guys recommend?

I like things set in different time periods, aliens, space... really anything involving sci-fi. I know this genre has by far the worst movies however so its not easy picking one out that isn't terrible.

Returner (Ritana) for instance, was an awesome movie imo. So was the independent one about the 2 friends that build a time machine in their garage and basically fuck their lives up with it. Can't think of the name...

I don't mind subtitles and it has to be film, not anime or cartoons or anything...

Don't get me started on that. In short the answer is "Star Trek: Nemesis". Basically they had a board room meeting that went something like this:

"So we are at the top of our game. The series ended with insanely high ratings. We are on our 4rth movie. Our fans are screaming for more more more. Any ideas what we should do next?"

SILENCE.

"Anyone?"

Voice way in the back: "Uhh we could hand the series over to a 10th rate action movie director who has basically no history and knows nothing about the franchise. Oh oh oh... and while we are at it lets clone Picard, throw in some ATV racing and kill Data!!"

"Sounds like a FANTASTIC idea!!"

Indeed. one falls on the losing end of this fine line of decent or suck...which is why I tend to avoid it.

Watch Children of Men if you've yet to see it. It is by far the best Sci Fi to come out in some time.

Event Horizon, Sunshine, Moon. Moon is one of my favourite movies of the past while, I just saw it for the second time in the theatre this past weekend.

Sound of Thunder - decent rental about what can go wrong with time travel.
Logan's Run - Classic 70s
The Chronicles of Riddick - solid
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow - a lot of very retro WTF in this one, but I liked it.
Crossworlds - cheesy but fun, and also the only movie I know of with both Rutger Hauer and Jack Black
The Final Countdown - great movie from the late 70s

Wow I just watched Gattaca on netflix instant... freaking amazing. lol at Nemesis, can't believe the series ended with that movie. Makes me sad. I saw Moon in theaters, really really good.. as was event horizon and children of men.

I'll have to check out the Sound of Thunder next time I get a chance to watch somethin...

thanks for the suggestions

Great list. I'll add some more tomorrow when I get time. Also, I have to say if you're into TV Series and want Sci-Fi then definitely watch the Battlestar Galactica series (the new reimaging). It's nothing short of fantastic.
