Mine is nice and cool. I can and regularly do sit with it on my lap for hours without a problem.

My older brother has had 2 Inspirons (an 8500 with a Pentium 4M and a 600m with a Pentium M Banias) and both are fine heat wise. The ones with Pentium 4s in them had problems with heat as well as the 5xxx series, but those have long been retired by Dell.

my Inspiron 9200 got really hot when playing games. But then I had it on a desk and didn't really care. It was also pretty noisy when the fans spooled up and were going full blast. But even when I'm just surfing the net and the fans aren't going full blast, the noise is bothersome. My MBP is much quieter (albeit hotter running).

I can't find anything as good as my 9300 .. so I don't know how to upgrade

It is 17" 1920x1200 x1300 128mb .. 100gb -- gets 4hours of non gaming or movie battery life.. and has a very good wireless signal...

one area gets a little warm but not hot.

Inspiron 6000 (Pentium M 1.6GHz, Radeon Mobility X300 128MB). Gets pretty hot when gaming - fan noisy as all heck and I have to use it propped up for ventilation or it overheats. If just web browsing and other minor stuff, no problems.

Your question is too generic and it really depends on the model.

My E1505 can get pretty warm, but only when folding.

Edit: almost forgot, I have a T2300 and integrated graphics.

The HDD gets warm on my e1505 sometimes, but it never goes above 45 degrees C. Everything else is well cooled.

Both the 8600 & M170 get warm, but not hot. Rarely use them for more than an hour though.
