It's embarrassing really but I always get through it and tell myself it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, that is until next time and then here we go again.

thank you for posting in my thread, I feel rather honored given your join date and your low post count

the needles going into my mouth freaks me out the most, the mere thought makes me weak at the knees.

Do you faint too, like clasping your forehead with the back of your hand, crumbling to the ground in a tight white summer slip kind of faint?

What a day..took valium before bed last night, actually slept well, worked from 7am-1:30pm... took 10 mg valium went to oral surgeon, had gas, novicane 2 bad teeth gone in secionds.. this guy was REALLY good, the tooth that was busted at the gumline he was able to pop it out without cutting ! my OOP was $152 for co-pay and worth every penny. I'm doing the ice bag
fithfully to reduce swelling, vicodin and motrin for pain.

My very worst fear conquered, I'll be scheduling followup appointments to restore me to good dental health and explore options for implants or a bridge for those 2 back teeth, I'm thankful
that at least they were molars in back so my smile is still ok.

my dentist never gave me the option to knock me out cold. he just injects that novacaine, numbed me up and removed my wisdom tooth and did a root canal. i hate to see and hear it all. went a month ago to get another wisdom tooth pulled, sat in the chair, and just as he's about to start...i tell him forget it, i'm going home........ haven't went back since

This thread is filled with awesomeness!

Had my first root canal a couple years ago. Despite the fact that I was scared to death, it was literally no worse for me than a regular filling. I need to get back, actually 'cuz I promised myself I was going to start going religiously, but still fall into the same "I'll go later" crap.

(Old dentist quit taking HMO & I'm not thrilled with wife's dentist, but may have to make them my regular)

not really. I have an extremely high tolerance to pain and medication, but pretty much only go the doc or dentist(cept for cleaning) only when in extreme pain

Never went to the dentist before. I'm one of those people that don't need wisdom teeth pulled out. I don't *think* I have cavities but my teeth are very white with tint of yellow (well, bone/teeth is naturally yellow, anyone with pure white teeth is definitely bleached and unnatural). No over bite or under bite.

My parents did one hell of a good job raising me and teaching me hygiene (neither of them are dentist or in the medical field). I think it was because there were lots of times when we didn't have medical insurance.

I use to be a dental assistant. for some reason I couldn't get enough of that grinding, teeth shattering sound. You know, the one when the doc has a tooth in his plyers with one leg on the door to the room for leverage and you hear that loud *crack*.. *crack*... And the patients is making noises like a tomb full of mummies.. *ahhhhh... * *ohhhhhh* *ugghhhhghhhh*
Those where good times... good times..

I had a fear back when I was 8. That fear was gone by the time I was 9. If you go regularly, you really have nothing to fear.

This thread reminds me that I'm way overdue for a cleaning. My last was 2 years ago.

Glad to hear it went ok.
I was going to say that if you have a dentist with good people skills then it makes the whole thing that much easier. I just had all my teeth removed, traffic accident, and the doc walked in with a cd filled with classic rock , started playing it, then walked over to me, saying "Well, dude, ready to get this done ?", then when I told him "yep, ready", he replied "Excellent, just what I like to here, I'll have you thinking your swinging with some playmates, in no time at all " .Then started the sedation. Guy was in his 50's so this kind of surprised me.

ugh, I don't go to dentists voluntarily. hell no. My parents usually end up forcing me, but then again, since I do live under their roof when not in school, I guess I still have to obey. Sadly.
Even with Novocaine and gas, I still end up feeling the drills. Next time, if I can't convince them to knock me out, I am claiming I don't feel any effects of the gas when they check up before operating. Since they default to a low mix, they have room to up the ratio of N2O to air/oxygen. Maybe I can get them to get me into my own little world. Last time I kind of was in my own world, except when the drilling was no longer superficial surface drilling. My mouth is apparently hyper sensitive to pain.

I don't mind any of the stuff they do to you but the problem is when dentists and their assistants just humiliate you.

"How often do you floss?" "Uh... sometimes... once a week maybe?" "Well you should be flossing every day so try to remember to do that from now on!"

"You really need to work on your front lower teeth some more, there's a lot of buildup there! Floss more and make sure you brush there really thoroughly."

Going to the dentist for me is like making an appointment to go in and be scolded. It really does kind of suck. But I can always tough it out through whatever they do to my teeth. Then again, I've never had anything really big done. I've never had a cavity or anything else.

I haven't been to the dentist in almost 18 years. I used to go regularly for checkups but then stupidly stopped and now I'm afraid to go.

Yeah, I forgone the dentist for my usual 4 year intervals. This interval looks to be the most pricey and time consuming. I had about 12-15 cavities, mostly facial, and one big son of a gun that took most of my back top molar away. I will now need a root canal and crown extension on it.

The root canal I'm not so fearful of, just as long as the endodontist is as good as they say she is. Actually, the cavity was big enough that the dentist had to extract the nerve anyway so there might not be much left by the time I do the canal.

I am, however, more worried about the crown extension. The procedure sounds scary as hell and the thought of having stitches in my gums for two days, with the bone exposed for several weeks scares the shit out of me. My other fear is that he ends up finding more cavities that were deeper than he expected.

On top of all this I still got 10 other cavities that have to be drilled, but my dentist is awesome with pain and needles. Though the one cavity that needed a crown was my biggest and deepest, so hopefully no more costly procedures will come out of this.

I guess it's best to do this now before I end up losing all my teeth or getting infections. My mom had to get 12 or so implants and having posts drilled and screwed into your jaw bone is worse than giving child birth after the anesthesia wears off. My mom actually lost 25 lbs because she couldn't eat anything for about 2 months and the only way she could sleep was by passing out through shear exhaustion.

So I'm looking at about 1-2 grand after insurance, with about 2-3 weeks of discomfort and pain goofed up on meds. The more you wait, the worse it gets. Trust me, suck it up and go.

Can I get away with it just this once? I'm nervous as hell, and now me and Geekbabe share a bond together.

I love going to the dentist. My teeth just feel so nice and smooth after a good cleaning and polishing. It's kind of like getting a haircut.

suck it up. Within the last few months I had, 2 extractions, 1 root canal and undergoing a crown/cap treatment.

The pain is tiny compared with the toothache I have to deal with for months on end.
