Saw the oral surgeon for consult this morning..

am looking out 1 surgical extraction on one molar and either pulpectomy and crown lengthening on the molar right next to it or another extraction if it's too far gone.

I'm being pre-medicated with valuim and having gas/ novicane

I'm scared to death

I haven't gone back to the dentist since I had a root canal and wisdom teeth pulled on the same day. They couldn't "put me under" because I had to drive home. That was the most horrible sound in the world and I was in bedridden with pain for four days. This was 4 years ago.

I now have a cracked tooth and am waiting for it to hurt before I go back to the dentist. I have good insurance, I'm just kinda stupid I guess.

Hang in there. You'll get some good drugs out of the deal.

yeah me.

i can stay awake for anything else and deal with a good amount of pain also. But when dealing with stuff done to my mouth i panic and get sick. the sounds and feeling just puts me over the edge.

though when i had nose surgery when they were unpacking my nose it didnt bother me. felt really weird but didnt bother me.

I'm not sure why you're rolling your eyes but on top of how crappy I feel, it isn't appreciated.. not at all.

I'd just go with the IV drip. Had that done for my wisdom teeth removal. It rocked.

And here come the "Stop being such a pussy. I had my wisdom teeth removed with a hammer and chisel in my garage...by myself, with no Novocaine" people.

my dentist and I have an understanding.

He knocks me out cold and I promise to have someone else drive me home.

Otherwise, he ain't getting near my mouth with so much as a lollipop.

I'd go with sedation if I was having more done. Aside from the $400 extra cost which is better spent getting the rest of my mouth restored to good dental health, there's always a risk in being put out in a non-hospital setting.

I've been really sick with infection from this, it's been a long week

I hate the dentist. I think I mostly hate the tools and sounds associated with those tools. Luckily I have had fairly easy teeth. I hate the eye doctor more. I await the fight that will come when I refuse any diagnostic where they will touch my eye or put something in my eye aside from me placing the contacts in my eyes and them looking at my eyes.

I don't do the gas thing. I love the needle. I just go to sleep when I visit the dentist. I do have a little problem w/ producing too much saliva though. So if the asst. can't suck it out in time, I would have a natural reflect to swallow the saliva, causing unwanted movement in my mouth. My dentist hates that.

oh god, I agree 100% I don't need to see the tray of tools, I'd like to be nice and gorked on the valium, close my eyes, listen to my ipod as I suck in as much of the gas as my lungs can hold.

The part that makes me want to vomit is when they lean in, raise your lip while holding the needle for the novicane... shudder!!

Is it just a fear of being operated on that's bothering you? If so, I've always just told myself that these are routine things that they do, and so there isn't anything to worry about at all.

I don't mind going to the dentist but I absolutely cannot relax. I am 100% tense while they are working on me.

This might strike you as strange but opiate based pain meds don't thrill me. I've alternated regular tylenol with motrin and used ice bags all week for pain relief, the tylenol with codeine is sitting untouched on a shelf...and the pain/fever has been pretty bad. Sunday night/monday morning I was an 8-9

*raises hand* I hate the dentist. I go every four or five years. Eight years ago I went and I wasnt able to eat anything hot or cold for a year. I went a few months ago, and my teeth are in perfect condition, just needed cleaning. No way in hell is he getting close to my teeth with a drill or any other archaic torture device ever again.

When you're out he does indeed put his lollipop in your mouth.

Pay no attention to Mr. rolleye, there are a lot of people who dread the Dentist including lurkers like me.
It's funny but I have no problems with needles until they go to put it in my mouth, then it just makes me want hold someones hand (hopefully a good looking dental assistant) like some little kid.
It's embarrassing really but I always get through it and tell myself it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, that is until next time and then here we go again.

a friend of mine told me about *her* friend that used to live in germany and have to have a tooth removed, i cant remember if it was a wisdom tooth or not

they just dove right in, no painkiller or anything. she may have said a burly nurse held him still.

my orthodontist told me almost a decade ago id need some wisdom teeth removed. i was kinda afraid, and kinda didnt trust the guy to start with so i said no thanks. they havent bothered me (admittedly, one has come in rather oddly, but thats all)

I don't know what there is to be scared about. I once had a cavity filled without any novacaine, and it hurt like hell, but it's not like to dentist went "Take this motherf***er!!!". Nope, I just sat there and felt the gradual built up of pain when the drillbit got closer to the nerve. So there's blood, it hurts, but you expect it. It's more annoying than anything. Just had 4 wisdom teeth ripped out in less than half an hour under full sedation, felt nothing until the next day.

I had my first root canal last year. I had a tooth that had broken and I neglected it for quite a while. It ended up getting infected in all of the canals. The dentist had to give me an injection directly into one of the infected canals. My 2nd root canal happened because he sealed off a tooth that had an active infection. I got a large blister inside my mouth that filled up roughly half of the roof of my mouth. I eventually popped it with my tongue and sat through days of spitting out puss. When he drilled into that tooth, I thought someone had released raw sewage into the room. What a terrible smelling infection. Cleaned all of that out, filled it up, and capped it.

Needless to say, I now take much better care of my teeth. In fact, I'm going to go brush them again.
