Any DirecTV subscribers here? Do you have the HDTV package with them and a DVR unit?
if you do did you pay for the HD DVR unit yourself or did they give it to you?

I have DirecTV with HD and the DVR.
When I upgraded to HD, I already had DirecTV service so I went with their HD DVR unit.
I had to pay for that upgrade.

I have DirecTV HD but not the HD-DVR. I haven't taken the time yet to try and get one because there are rumors floating around that they may go back with TIVO and I would rather have a TIVO based unit. If you are a long time subscriber you may be able to haggle with them and get the DVR for around $20.00 with a 2 year commitment.

Huge thread on this very topic.

Yes i'm a long time subscriber, its now almost 10 years. I currently do not have a HDTV but want to get one. I already have a DirecTV R10 Tivo unit and love it and if its true that they will go back to Tivo it would be great.
But right now if I want HD i don't want to pay $400 out of my pocket for a HD-DVR unit. I could just dump the service instead and go with cable that gives you the HD DVR free and most HD programming for free already.

I was able to upgrade for free to an HD DirecTivo with a contract extension. The package also included a new dish, a couple of new lines and complete installation.

I'm pretty sure that you'll have to put out at least a few bucks to get one of the newer HD systems but DirecTV does take care of their long term customer. I haven't paid for equipment or installation since I bought my first RCA receiver 7 years ago.

I have the Comcast SA 8300 HD DVR and it sucks hard. No dual tuners, most clunky user unfriendly interface I have ever seen. If you are persistent you should be able to get the HR20 for $20.00 from them. The current trick seems to be to email them and then when you talk to them on the phone they will either set you up with that deal. If not you mention the cable option, get switched to retention, and get it from them.

Yeah, I already email them and waiting on a reply. I also asked them about upgrading my other two receivers. Both have weird issues.
My house is already setup for HD, I have a Dish with the three LNB setup, its all about switching the receivers. I think the only thing extra i have to do is switch the LNB on the Dish because it can only receive a signal from two satellites, i think the third one being the HD side is defective.

They'll schedule you an install and give you a new slimline 5 LNB dish if you get the deal. They'll also have to swap out the multi-switch for one that is compatible with the 5 LNB system.

Do you have to get the 5 LNB dish to make it work? The 3 LNB would not work?

Yes you have to get the new dish, the 3 LNB will not work for the new channels.

I've only been a customer for a little over a year, so I did not have much leverage to get the the HD DVR for free.
I did receive HBO for free for 6 months and 1 year free DVR programming.

The HD DVR and 5LNB dish ( slim line dish) work great for me.

Same here and it was well worth it.

It's an extra $9.99 a month for HD programing and the usual $4.99 a month for the DVR service. They installed a 5 LNB dish with my DVR install. I wish they were still with TIVO though. I don't like the DirecTV DVR as much as the non-HD TIVO unit we have from them (which is currently in our master bedroom).

Uh, the 8300HD definitely has dual tuners. I own one from Time Warner.

Interesting. Does it buffer both of them for 30 minutes so you can switch back and forth? Comcast gave me 0 documentation with this thing so I am going to dig around a bit on that site you linked. I am just really spoiled atm with my TIVO based SD DirecTV DVR. I know the DirecTV HD DVR has dual channel support but one of the major complaints is that it does not buffer both of them for 30 minutes the way the older TIVO based unit does.

Do you have both services (Comcast & DirecTV)? And how much is Comcast charging you for the HD DVR?

You pay for the upgrade (unless there's a deal going on) and pay a lease for the receiver they bring out to do the upgrade with. Best Buy is partnered with DirecTV, you could buy your receiver from them, and the technician will activate the access card after the installation. If you're a current DirecTV customer with a standard triple-sat dish, they'll also replace the dish with the 5-LNB model. Obviously you'll also pay a little more for your programming.

I used to work for DirecTV, if you have any other questions, feel free.

At the moment yes I do but not for much longer. I have Comcast cable modem service so I had the lowest basic cable on with it. When I got my HD set the only HD I could get until I got my DirecTV upgraded to an HD box was to hook the cable directly to the TV. I don't know off the top of my head how much the Comcast DVR is but if I recall correctly it wasn't that much more on top of the Digital cable service. Now that DirecTV has their box out and somewhat debugged I am going to get rid of the Comcast stuff once I get the Comcast DVR (assuming they will give me a deal on it).

Right now I have Premier package that already includes the DVR service included. I pay $106 a month.
So the HD package is an extra $9.99. I guess if they have to replace the dish then so be it. Just hope they don't have to run extra cable line, i don't need more holes in the house.

They will need to run either 4 or 5 cables from the dish in to the multiswitch but they should be able to use the existing hole as long as your current dish is mounted in a place that will support the larger dish. I hear the new slimline dishes are not nearly as heavy as the one they gave me last year (+/- 45lbs) so that may not be as much of an issue as it used to be.

I was dropping Cabel and going back to Direct TV but when i called they said my HD tunners were not abel to be used and I would have to buy the new ones. I have 2 HD tv's one is a CRT sony and the other a early 50 " rear projection LCD. I could not see having to buy a upgrade to my HD box's after I already paid like $300 plus for them.
I called Dish Network and they had a much cheaper way to get set up but was unabel to get a HD singal do to trees blocking the HD satalite.
So I am now back to watching only standard TV on my sets. The sets are ony 480p anyway, and I hope that either Dish gets there HD progaming on the satalites I can get or Direct TV comes down in the price or gives me a better deal on the upgrades once the prices come down and I get the cash to get a 1080p set.

So I'm guessing you have two receivers right now, the DVR and a standard receiver probably in a bedroom. Unless you want the HD receiver to go in a new location, no new holes need to be drilled. The technician will just run 4 cables from the LNB to a 4x8 multiswitch, and use currently existing wire for everything after that. Yes the dish will be replaced with a 5-LNB model.

Actually I have three receivers. The living room receiver is the current Tivo DVR with two cable lines into that room. Then two single lines to two bedrooms.

I would like ad the HD DVR to the living room and move the current Tivo DVR to another room and hopefully get later on a regular HD receiver in the last room.

Do you know if the 5-LNB ones have a built in multi-switch? The idiot who installed my 3-LNB dish ran 2 wires upstairs and 2 downstairs (2 holes through the house).
