If you want to do smoothies on the cheep, the best bang for the buck thing is a food processor!

There is a bit more cleanup but it will chop anything to pieces. The blades are huge and for cutting.

One of my favorite things to make is a pseudo ice cream.

Take a bunch of frozen fruit.

cherries best,
blue berries next,
strawberries good and a great filler but will require sweetener
raspberries etc
bananas are ok but can make it too thick (but good with strawberries)

A couple of my blends are

10 cherries
4-7 large strawberries
a handfull of blueberries
maybe some raspberries

or

1 frozen banana (peal and quarter before freezing)
5-9 large strawberries

To either above add

3 tablespoons of non-dairy creamer (not necessary but good)
1/4 cup splenda (or sugar or whatever) if you use strawberries. (Cherries, blueberries, raspberries are sweet enough on their own)
prob a cup of half and half (heavy whipping cream) Depending on the amount it could be more or less.

One of the key things to doing it with a food processor is, you don't need to put a ton of liquid to start. In fact sometimes I start dry with just the frozen fruit and sweetener/creamer and add most the liquid later.

I like to use a bit of non-dairy creamer with a bit of half and half, maybe some splenda if strawberries are used or to taste. If you want it really good go for the heavy whipping cream. It's really to taste. It is best to start with a bit half and half and finish with the heavy.

So crank it up and chop for a bit. After about 30 sec you can start adding the cream. You will know when its right as it will thicken to a paste.

It will make about 3-4 man servings. Freeze for later. A 1 min trip in the microwave will return it to near its freshly created state. If not you're going to have to wait a while it is way too hard frozen.

Edit: BTW I'm not talking about using the chopping disk just putting it in with the rotary blades
