I would add that ibuprofen is potentially very toxic to your kidneys, and at the rate you are taking it could easily damage them to the point of failure. The maximum safe dosage of ibuprofen is generally 3200mg/ day for an otherwise healthy adult male. That's 800mg every six hours MAXIMUM, assuming you don't have high blood pressure, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease. And as Azraele mentioned, there's also the risk of serious gastrointestinal bleeding, which can also be life-threatening.

Read the label, and follow the directions. They're there for a reason. Renal failure would be considerably worse than migraines, I'm afraid.

Before I go to an actual doctor (hopefully within the next week), I'd like to get the opinions of others. So, a few questions:

1. Just so I don't screw myself up, how much Ibuprofen is too much?
2. My dentist recently told me my wisdom teeth should be causing me problems, could they have anything to do with the headaches?
3. What could cause a headache like this?

Any help would be nice.

1.) 3200mg per 24 hour period.
2.) Yes they could be
3.) Stress of any sort, and various other things that are probably too long to list. Don't goto an ER for a migraine tho, call your doctor first. Also consider getting those wisdom teeth out ASAP. Also if you get frequent migraines figure out what your triggers are and either eliminate or reduce those triggers.

First off, i am a hardcore migraine sufferer. I feel your pain (literally) and i wanted to give you some of my thoughts on the subject:
1. I was told by my dr not to take more than 800mg of advil per 4 hours (based on my weight and makeup) For you, i am sure it is different, but follow the instructions on the package of OTC pills you have.
2. Yes, your wisdom teeth *could* be causing you to have headaches. As a matter of fact, they could be getting infected and causing it, but i don't know if it could be a migraine or just a relly bad headache.
3. A lot of factors can cause migraines. Stress, pollution in the air around you, the food you eat (MSG, or nitrates) not enough sleep, too much sleep.

The best thing to do is see a dr. keep a simple journal for a while to try and find your trigger too.
GL.

Go see a dentist and get an x-ray of your mouth. The dentist should be able to tell you if you have an infection around the tooth/teeth.

If you have no infections there, then go see a doctor.

Be careful.

Christmas 2005, my Dad had severe migraine headaches and refused to go to the doctor.

When he finally did, they airlifted him to San Francisco because he had an aneurysm between the two hemispheres of his brain.

I spent my entire birthday (Dec. 24) in the hospital waiting room while the neurosurgeon performed an 8-hour operation to clamp the broken artery in his brain.

Doctor Number1 here. In regard to your questions:

1: A bottle of Ibuprofen is too much, so are boatloads and shiploads of ibuprofen.

2: Never take any chances with teeth. Have them removed at your earliest convenience or when you get tired of the headache.

3: First the good news. The simple fact that you are getting a headache is an indication that you do have a head. Now the bad news. Your cerebral appendage does not appear to be used much considering its less then stellar performance in this thread. Your brain may be sending you signals that it is being under used. Like they say, use it or loose it.

Prescription: Consider doing sudoku puzzles occasionally and mostly discontinue asking for medical advices on ATOT.

That is all

Not that I know of, just another thing to get looked at while I'm at it. I was supposed to see my family doctor on Monday, but I was asked to work so I have to miss it. I'll pop by a clinic within the week, though.

Well I used to have migrains soo bad I would go blind in 1 eye (only once did I loose vision in both eyes) These migrains would last for 24hrs a day for 3 weeks straight. I was taking probably that much if not more in ibuprofen.

First of all go see a doc.

What could be your problem is:
Stress (This was most of my problems)
Your wisdom teeth
Eyes (this was also my problem apparently I needed glasses)
Could be brain problems

Could be alot of different things

1.) Read the bottle although it has been said that anything above 400mg really doesn't do much more for the pain. (In 24hr period, if you not in a hospital it should be 1800mg MAX)
You should also check out Acetaminophen. Some say that might work better for headaches but it all depends on the person.
Also caffeine can also be good on headaches although I would imagine it's probably too late for that right now.

2.) Probably.

3.) Migraines are normally caused by some sort of trigger. You just have to find your triggers. For some it's soda, others it may be something else they eat. You just have to find what gives YOU!!!!!111 a migraine.

Yea, I know migraines are probably a bitch (i've never really had one but my mom use to get them a lot until she found out what was cause them. Since then (it was soda for her) she really hasn't got any since.

Try getting enough sleep for several days in a row. If I don't get at least 7 hours, I start to get a bit "stupid," which I use as a catchall term. My speech gets a bit slower and, not quite slurred, but just not as coherent as it should be. As I approach 4 hours of sleep, I start to forget how to do simple things, such as calculating the area of a rectangle - with a calculator. Headaches often accompany this state, but definitely not migraines.

I also notice that my mood improves greatly when I get enough sleep. I've been quite prone to depression for at least 10 years, and when I am in a sleep deprived state, it gets kind of bad, to the point that at times I just feel like my sanity is disintegrating or ripping itself apart. It's not pleasant. But it also just pisses me off that this damn brain requires that it be unconscious for nearly one third of its existence. Damn sunlight. I've often wondered what we'd be like if we lived on a planet with an orbit like Uranus', where one pole is exposed to the sun for 42 years at a time. Or perhaps a planet with some constant light source. Would we even need sleep, or would our brains have evolved to "sleep" while conscious?

Diet soda, perhaps? My mom and I both seem to have a sensitivity to aspartame (Nutra-Sweet). It brings on awful migraines. She also gets headaches from monosodium glutamate (MSG).

Long time migraine sufferer here. Go to your doctor! Get someone to drive you if the pain and dizzyness is too bad. When I get a migraine, I stick to 3 OTC Ibuprofen every 5 hours or a prescription sumatriptan (Imitrex). Then, I usually sleep regardless of the time or place.

From what I've read of migraine studies and whatnot, most are caused by the dilating and sensitivity of blood vessels in the head and near the brain. Cause of dilation, mostly unknown! It's no secret that they have lots of triggers: foods, change in sleeping patterns, change in eating patterns, stress, well pretty much everything you do. For me, if I drink half a glass of apple juice I'm going to have a migraine, no questions asked.

Get your wisdom teeth out too, when I had braces I had a headache pretty much all the time.

Bingo. I get pretty severe tension headaches if I don't get enough sleep.

I rarely get enough sleep, but this isn't anything new. I've been suffering from insomnia for years now. While I've always had headache/migraine problems, I would think sleep wouldn't be the main factor. I can operate normally on 3 hours of sleep.

I have migraines (although mine have the wonder added sh!t of stroke like symptoms) pretty bad--worse than most people due to the side effect & other symptoms. I do know people that have had migraines caused by wisdom teeth, so it is definitely something you should talk to your dentist about (ie getting them removed).

Midrin works wonders for migraines (although some people do not benefit from it--I have found that those that don't say that Imitrex works wonders for them). Unfortunately these are prescription only. You might consider taking some asprin, not for the headache, but to thin out the blood some. If I can't take anything, this sometimes eases the migraines.

Also, are you having any other symptoms: tunnel vision, hearing loss, passing out, dark vision, numbing of any other parts of the body?

Personally i think Excedrin is awful for headaches or migraines, because with the amount of acetominophen and caffeine, they can cause rebound headaches.

I have occasional migraines too, and over the years, we (doctors and I) haven't been able to figure out what is causing them. I've been given percocets, which i use very sparingly, but there's been times when even they couldn't dull the pain of a migraine.

:Q Wow. I might as well be called clinically retarded at 3 hours of sleep.

What keeps you awake? What are your sleeping patterns like? Do you follow a consistent schedule?

I used to sleep with a white noise maker, but in college, the surrounding noise is too much - I'd need a noisemaker running at around 100dB to drown out everything else. Now I sleep with earplugs, and I find it is much easier to get to sleep. Granted, if I've got a lot going on, like a special job at work the next day, or a slew of tests, then anxiety can make it a bit difficult. I just try to focus myself on keeping my mind clear, or else after awhile of laying in bed going in circles in my mind, finally just say to myself, "Stop mulling and go to sleep dammit!" Mulling in bed like that, in a tired state, probably won't solve anything anyway, and just prevent otherwise beneficial sleep.
