I enjoyed Dragonlance.

anyone read the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King?? it's his best work in my opinion. I'm not sure how it's usually categorized but it reads like sf/fantasy.

<< I bought the Annotated version of the Chronicles trilogy which has Weis and Hickman's comments on the side of the pages as you read. It's all three books in one hardback edition. The comments are very interesting, gives you a sense of how the story was developed and how it relates to the pen and paper adventures the books were based on.

Never read Martin, what books has he written? What kind of genre?
>>

I will have to pick that Annotated version up. I have not read much of the DragonLance series. I read the three Twins books, and The Legend Of Huma, and one or two others that I cannot recall.

You MUST read Martin. He is in a whole other league. His most popular series is the Song of Ice and Fire. 3 books are out so far:
A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords

This series involves fantasy and can vaguely be compared to dragonlance.

Dragonlance is THE BEST. I still read at least one book every year and I too would prefer it over LOTR any day of the week and 2x on Sundays. I'm only reading LOTR to figure out what the hype is all about. And my sig is the most catalytic line in the whole saga.

For those who haven't read it in a long time, Weis/Hickman have come back to Krynn to write the continuing saga of the New Generation Heroes. It's called the "War of Souls" trilogy and there are already 2 books out: Dragons of a Fallen Sun and Dragons of a Lost Star. The final chapter, Dragons of a Vanished Moon will come out April/May next year. Lost Star is probably the most tragic of the whole saga so far. I went to a book signing that they had for it in Milpitas last year and they are the nicest people!

And for those who have never read it, here's the sequence to read it in:

Chronicles:
Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Dragons of Winter Night
Dragons of Spring Dawning

Legends:
Time of the Twins
War of the Twins
Test of the Twins

The Second Generation (a collection of short stories introducing the new characters, all by Weis/Hickman)

Chronicles Volume 4: Dragons of Summer Flame

War of Souls:
Dragons of a Fallen Sun
Dragons of a Lost Star
Dragons of a Vanished Moon (out next year)

Enjoy!

I was way more into Forgotten Realms. I didn't really care much for way the Dragonlance books read.

WOW! Thanks for the update, i didn't even realize they were back at it. Damn, i'm definitely going to go back to Krynn after i finish LOTR and Harry Potter.

For stories... Dragonlance was much better. The only good story of Forgotten Realms was the Times of Trouble, and even then, it wasn't as epic as Dragonlance Chronicles.

But for playing, Forgotten Realms was MUCH better than Dragonlance (although my favorite was Dark Sun).

on another note...you guys should REALLY go back and edit out those spoilers...it ruins much of the enjoyment out the books if you give away such important plot points!!!

oh yeah another cool thing...if you visit tracy hickman's official website here

it states that if you send her one of your books with a self-addressed and pre-paid envelope as well she will SIGN your book and send it back to you!! how cool is that?? if only Margaret offered to do the same

Margaret however is not outdone however...she personally answers her own e-mail. And get this! I fired off an e-mail to her last night and I had an e-mail response from the author sitting in my mailbox this morning

She says that Wizards of the Coast are planning to release an annotated Legends in 2003!!!

hehe i should really do all this in one post...but i like to get my post count up

if your favorite character is raistlin you guys should really pick up The Soulforge (focuses on Raistlin from childhood straight up to the TEST at the Tower of High Sorcery) and its sequel Brothers in Arms (about the mercenary work the two twins pick up prior to Chronicles)

I loved the dragonlance books. i was reading them all in order, and got up to the tales trilogies. those killed me. haven't read any of them since.
My favourites were the original chronicles, and the twins saga. and the legend of huma/kaz the minotaur. I'm hoping with the success of lord of the rings, someone will take on some dragonlance books and do them some justice. but in the lord of the rings movie vein, not that accursed dungeons and dragon movie vein. I'd most like to see them do the original three chronicles, or maybe the legend of huma. but then again, i'm not sure if the technology is up to the point where it's economical to recreate massive dragon fights as in huma's tale.

I really couldn't get into dragon lance, but I loved Terry Brooks books. The Shananerra (sp) triligies were great. Have any of you guys read any of his stuff?

I picked up a newer book of his about a year ago. Truth of the word or something. It is modernday type stuff. It was ok, but not as good as the Shananerra and magic kingdom books were. I guess I am also older now, so that might be part of it. I never read LOTR, but am going to see it as soon as it comes out.

I'm currently re-reading The Dragonlance Chronicles.....again Right now, Sturm is standing on top of the High Clerist's Tower preparing for the confrontation with the Dragon Highlord (and no, I won't give any secrets away for anyone who hasn't read it yet...). Excellent book!!! -kd5-
