I would start off with a cheap ~$100 drone. They are harder to fly and easier to lose/crash, while something like a phantom is rather easy to fly even for a 6 year old, it would be expensive to lose/crash it!

Basically depends on your budget, and if you want something you want to play around with too.

When I got my phantom I gave my small one to my nephews I told them not to do the things I did with it. (like go ridiculously high and almost lose it lol)

My budget is $100, but I would love to get cheaper one with good frame. I search through web these days. Found some list of best drones and reviews, so I think I would buy Blade Inductrix, $50 is price and I want some fun with it too . www.fitdrones.com/blade-inductrix-nano-drone/ .Here is link to site where I found review, so be free to comment and share knowledge with me. Thanks!!

anyways, im curious where you get your insurance with zero deductible. Neary Aerial was in business, guess they are gone now

I have the zero deductible insurance on my mavic pro through State Farm. The policy covers both thendrone and my wife’s wedding ring - $5 a month.

There's some weird laws here about drones, one involves needing insurance. But there is no such thing as drone insurance here, it's just not something that anyone offers. And it's not worth paying for if you're just a casual user. Insurance here is expensive. I'm not going to pay $100/mo or whatever it would cost, just so I can play with my drone a couple times a month. You also have to put your name and address on your drone. FTS. I hate how when something new comes out the government always wants to control it.

I used to fly a lot when I lived in Texas. I have dji clone with a gimbal and gopro clone, a 300-class brushed quad, a blade 200, 2 symas, and 4 or 5 palm sized indoor quads. I can't fly anything outside, because pretty much the entire state is in the SLC international nofly zone. Fucking Utah

I'd probably go with a Syma unit. You could get an X5, which is a bit cheaper and smaller, but smaller and lighter also usually means it's more susceptible to wind. The X8 is larger and less susceptible to the wind, but it's also a bit more expensive. They have camera units ('C' designation), and FPV units ('W' designation). One nice thing is that the Syma units are also fairly easy to repair, which is helpful since he'll likely crash it. (To note, when I say easy, I'm ignoring that there are about a billion screws you have to remove!)

this is a standard home insurance thing? if not, what's the policy name, i fly a lot and this would save a lot of headaches if my drone crashes

I have a mavic pro and it is just amazing. I use it a lot in the summer when hiking or towing the kids around on the boat (the object follow feature works amazing on boats). Really fun. Can't wait till they come out with a mavic pro 2. I'll be first in line if it has a better camera.

Think MAAC (https://www.maac.ca/en/) also offers insurance now that you mention it. Though for a casual user it's not really worth it at this point but if I get more into it I'd probably join. What I do eventually want to do is build drones. Probably start with ground based RC just to get a feel for the electronics first.

It is just their personal articles policy. $5 a month is the minimum policy, however that premium covers much more than the cost of the drone, so we also added my wife's wedding ring on there to cover the remainder.
