Any epi-pen users here? What are you doing now that epi-pens are expensive??!?

My employer's benefits prefer I just fucking die and not try to get them to lessen the cost of Epipens. I gave up grilling so as to reduce my time outside the home, car, etc.

My 'benefits' benefit my employer, not me. And now they have lumped together the prescription med deductible into the medical deductible so they pay nothing until the +$1000 has been met. Then I pay 20% until I have paid another $4K out of my pocket.

Great benefits from a company with 1/4 million employees.

We have to have a couple of sets for my son. One set for home, one for school, and another for grandma's. Insurance pays for most of it, but I'm certain we're out a couple hundred dollars...and they expire rather rapidly.

My friend gave me an epi-pen just before he died, it must have been really important to him, and he wanted me to have it.

My mom stopped buying epi-pens for herself because they were too expensive. She died at 52 and an epi-pen could have saved her life. :'( Had I known then what I know now I would have gotten a job as a teenager just to pay for them.

I'm okay with like, 3 month old expired medication, but after a few years....

I will have to take a picture of our epi-pen that expired in 2013 to one that expires today, i cannot see a difference. I took it to the pharmacy and they said they cannot help me. I know they can become poisonous but my does nto appear to be cloudy like i am supposed to check for. Further they come cloudy to begin with.

My insurance gives me the privilege to pay 100% until i hit the deductible and I need 6 epi pen's.

Keep in mind depending on the environmental lighting this difference could be less drastic.

It isn't just the date that takes a toll on the med, they are very sensitive to temperature changes.

Years ago I was told that I should replace them often if I kept one in my bag as it would go with me into a freezing cold car in winter and a boiling hot one in summer. As I would presumably need full strength epi if it came to grabbing for it, with my life on the line, I haven't stinted on replacing them seasonally. I have that luxury as I'm not paying $$$$ for them.

As far as needing 2, my Emergency med doc bro told me that many times, one shot is not enough if someone is facing anaphylaxis

each shot is about 20 minutes of keeping you alive, I can see the drive time and assessment at a hospital easily eating up that time, ambulance or not. 2 seems like the minimum number to have on hand.

Good luck carrying a syringe, a vial of epinephrine, and being able to accurately measure and inject yourself in a panic situation. This is a really, really bad suggestion. The reason pens are what you get are that they work through clothes, are easy, and only require gross motor skills. You pull the top off, and jab it into your thigh and hold it there for a bit (no worries about holding it too long).

you do it before hand...you can ask a pharmacist to prep them for you.

Yeah a peanut allergy kid scares me more than epi-pen prices. If I ever have a kid I am gonna sprinkle PB2 peanut butter powder in their crib and force my wife to eat peanut butter every day she is pregnant to avoid that whole situation.
