One of the most RP experiences I've had in computer games was when I was in beta, waiting at the docks as a human with an elf friend I made in the dark forest, when suddenly from the boat comes a huge terrible creature... we saw our first troll! and we all roleplayed it as if we both thought it was there to attack us and made the troll promise he wouldn't eat us, eventually the 3 of us made friends and grouped together until the end of beta. Those things just don't happen in MMOs anymore. I think it helped that the game was first person view default so you felt like it was you there, not like you were playing some character.

that's awesome used to do that also at different times; remember utterly terrified of certain forest at night time when undead poppped. I was like I'm a paladin we so can take them......*splat* son of a bitch....ok go farm to get undead proc sword from Najena.....*splat* dead still.......*keep being told* you can't take them at your level......I did some of them lol....it was slow but damn it I did it......I wouldn't run from a fight LOL

Sounds like you played it a good number of years! But yeah it is a different game now. I think it starts you in a tutorial dungeon and I think you can skip that by clicking a box when you are creating your character. At least that way you get to start in one of the original starter zones. But even then it still isn't the same. All the low level areas are empty of players, xp is so much faster, mana/health regen is so much faster, it doesn't have the same challenge or feel, there are NPC's you can hire which are overpowered and trivialize most of the game, etc..etc.. Also they remade a bunch of old areas and totally ruined them. Cazic Thule was a great place to level from about 18 ish to 30 ish and they turned it into a high level zone. But then more recently they remade a lot of the other zones including Freeport and now it is a huge sprawling city of brown, a chore to get around and lost all the old charm.

Yeah, we played many, many years. Had a pretty steady group I ran around with. We were all pretty much idiots, but we worked well together anyway, so we got to do alot of content we probably shouldn't have been able to do, considering we were all individually pretty gimp.

OUr main tank, a troll warrior, was kind of, well stupid, and he rarely would look at the chat box, so he never had any clue when crap would hit the fan.

Our go to back up tank, when the main was absent, was a dwarf warrior, who was actually pretty smart, but he spent more time starting flame wars in general chat than actually, you know, playing the game.

We had an iksar death knight, that drank heavily while he played. He generally ended the night face down on the keyboard. No amount of calling him could wake him up.

Our cleric was actually pretty popular in real life, with people just showing up at his apartment at all times of the day. You could usually tell, because he'd suddenly just be on auto follow on me, without him saying a word. Mid pull, running to a camp, mid sentence, didn't matter. He'd be gone for a little as 5 minute, or maybe as long as an hour.

We had an enchanter who was pretty good, but she was extremely opinionated, and was NEVER wrong, no matter...which led to some nasty arguments.

Of course, there was my shaman....i'd like to think I didn't suck, but I'm sure I did

The last spot, which was pretty much the only real dps in our poor little group, usually rotated around various other friends, who'd hang out with us when they were bored. Heck, sometimes we'd do without a real dps, and go out with 5 peeps. Talk about some slow killing.

You know, looking back on it, it's a wonder we ever got anything accomplished at all.

Oh, I will note, before I quit, I think they had already started revamping some of the older zones like ct. I remember going there a few times to farm some crafter ingredients, I think, after the revamp...i think.

Oh, speaking of crafting, EQ was the game that broke me of ever being able to like crafting in an mmo, or a regular game. Alchemy suuuuuuuuucked

I still play the game to this day. For me EQ raids is what makes it fun. Gathering 54 people to defeat some of the crazy encounters that EQ Devs can come up is what make it fun.

This video below is a recent raid that took multiple tries until it was defeated. I don't think the video does justice to the chaos going on especially at the end but it does give you an idea.

https://youtu.be/4Pd8OQ_TKk0

Btw, a couple months ago Daybreak launched brand new servers Ragefire and Lockjaw that only had content from the very first release of EQ. Since then Ragefire has now unlocked Ruins of Kunark but Lockjaw will have vanilla EQ for at least another 3 months. If you wanted to experience EQ as close as possible to the original release that is where you want to go.

Once, a group of us found a rowboat you could use on an island.

One person could turn people into wolves, and so we had a rowboat crammed with wolves sailing around.

Sitting around howling as wolves and laughing.

Just ran upon this threat and thought I would add some input. I started EQ when I was really young. I originally started with Ultima Online, but looking back I was way too inexperienced for a game like that. I remember seeing EQ in PC Gamer and the wording of a "virtual world" blew my mind.

Verant was a great company. I originally purchased EQ off of eBay (like a dummy, because I was really young) and it came as a copy of the game without a key. I contacted customer support and they gave me a key free of charge! Can you believe that? What company would do that today?

Ended up playing for about a week before talking it up to my school friends. Soon we had a few playing and it was a blast. I played until Velious and ended up moving on to other things. But, I fondly remember my time with EQ. Nothing will match it, because it was experienced though a child's eyes.

yeah, this sums up any discussion on what's best in gaming for me. Like many other things there's a window for this, and I'd hate to guess an exact number, when we're capable of forming a strong attachment to a particular lore or game world or game design. After that time we have formed our gut instinct on what is moving/amazing/attractive for us.

But nothing beats the original lore/worlds/designs that helped form those feelings.

Kind of a sad state of affairs on one side, but on the other it's pretty damn cool.

Well I played EQ1 when I was 31 years old, so I wasn't a kid. I do consider it the best MMO experience (note I didn't say the best MMO game). Probably because it was a novel experience not only to me, but for most players. Before the time when you can just do a quick google search for an area, or a creature, everything was hidden, ready to be discovered by you and your friends. There were no established rules for raids, no macros that did everything for you, etc. It was wild, and exciting.

Yup same here. I watched a friend play then got the game shortly after. I was blown away by being able to meet up with my friends. I was especially blown away with "meet us at the bank"

eq did alot of things new, but I don't consider it as the best mmo experience. QoL in eq was pretty bad and asked things that would be considered unrealistic now. 48 hour jboot camps? Wouldn't think of it. 10 minute breaks so your mana users can regen their mana back? mmm no. Scheduling your end game raid around all the other end game guilds because the zone is not instance? no thanks. Not being able to see your raids hp bars as a healer? NEXT!

Warcraft definitely got most of the tick boxes right the first time. A lot of their formulas have changed over time but when it came to basic requirements, it had them all. Well except raid heals, but we had amazing UI creators to fill in that hole. Another thing that to this day most MMOs don't even allow yet.

There are experiences in eq that won't be replaced, but I also don't care to relive them. I have never reloaded eq wanting to take a spin in the old lands.

Well, with no MMOs really worth playing, and while waiting on one of the Indie MMOs I am interested in, I decided to fire up EQ on the P99 server. Gotta say, it is ruthless and brutal and getting used to simple niceties such as maps and a compass not being around takes a bit of getting used to. But I am loving it and glad to be back - also nice to see my fond memories were not just rose tinted nostalgia.

I agree that the excessive camp times and lack of raid hp were flaws with the design and admittedly, without regen buffs mana regain can be a bit excessive - but actually that downtime I consider a big part of the social experience of an MMO. As games progressed that downtime was reduced to nothing and so between games being crazy solo friendly and even when you do group, they are so fast paced that there is no time to actually talk to your groupmates, MMOs have become very antisocial.

It wasn't really a flaw in the design. EQ was originally designed for small groups (up to 6 people), not for raids, those came later.

Groups were not fast paced. Everyone waited on a puller and many camp spots were not target rich so you waited on spawns too.

I don't think they will ever make MMORPG's like those of the past. I am not sure entirely why, whether it be profit related, server stress or some other facet of the business model. I do miss them though. I miss the open world 3 hour grind fest or boss camp, and subsequent hours spent in a main city hawking my wares. This account bound, instanced dungeon crap really ruined the genre for me some years ago, and I have tried most/all major MMO titles since my personal favorites, the Asheron's Call series.

I kind of agree I couldn't imagine myself & my friends logging on around 9pm and playing to 1am simply doesn't fit an adult life. I also think back its easy to remember the fun but there were reasons why we quit.

AAA games won't, but Indie ones will. It's a long way off, but www.sagaoflucimia.com is one indie game based on the old school playstyle - even has a Guild on P99 EQ server just for getting together with the community while their game progresses.
Pantheon will also likely have a more old school vibe to it though likely it wll also have a more modern MMO feel to it...I am thinking Vanguard will be more a comparison than EQ.

I very much agree, it was wild and exciting. They just had a combination of features tuned right. I just hope the time for this kind of game development has not passed. There must be a way to make money while staying closer to EQ than WoW.

Well, I am 31 now and have just started up Everquest 1 again on the P99 server and after all the years of modern MMOs, I thought I would struggle to enjoy EQ, but instead I realise exactly how much I miss what such a game brings.
I work full time which includes a long commute, so 12 hours a day are 'wasted' by work, I am also married, so compared to the time I had back in the day when first I played, I do not have nearly the same amount of time to play, but you know what? I still have enough time to enjoy myself - sure I do not level as fast thanks to less time, but those who believe they don't have time for this kind of gamestyle I think overestimate how much time you really need to dedicate to such a game (the exception being the silly long spawn timers which were not what I include as part of the great experience)
