Any experiance with KenTek PSUs?

Thanks to EVERYONE that posted. Even if you don't agree with my decision, everyone's input really was beneficial!

Summary: Didn't even think twice about the KenTeck, Went with Rosewill HIVE 650w.

Certain Rosewill series (the Stallion, Green) are very low quality and early on that was all Rosewill had.
Added to this fact is that Rosewill is Newegg in disguise. Being a budget brand hasn't helped their reputation either, so they dont have a great image among the tech community.

The newer units, like the HIVE are made by a good OEM and are of decent quality.
Therefore, the HIVE is a good, budget modular PSU, and is the one I purchased.

Obviously there are better PSUs out there. There are vast differences in quality and price of course and a higher end enthusiasts PSU can cost a few hundred dollars.
I'm looking for good quality at a more reasonable price and this is where the Hive series comes into play.





I've been looking at PSU's and was wondering if anyone had any experience with this PSU.
Is it good for the price or should I forget about it?

I'm looking for a modular PSU in the sub $90 range with no less than 650 watts.

I'm a college student & first time builder, so I'm not looking for anything fancy, just quality.

Unless you're planning on running SLI or CF then you'll probably not going to need 650W. If you post your system setup then we can help you better.

A quality PSU 550W is much better than a cheap 650W.

Never heard of KenTek. To be blunt, it's probably crap, don't bother.

What other components are you planning to get for your first build? I highly doubt you need anywhere near 650W.

I've already purchased my i5-3570K & ASUS P8Z77-V PRO
I am probably going to OC the i5 from 34000 to 44000. (Air cooled)
Use 4 sticks of RAM
SSD (boot)
2 ~ 7200rpm HDDs
2 ~ 120mm fans
2 ~ 80mm fans

Uncertain what GPU I'm going to get, but have been looking at <$200 cards:
Radeon HD 7850 2 GB
Radeon HD 7770
GeForce GTX 650 Ti
I also am looking for the possibly be able to SLI/Crossfire in the future.

As for what I do on my computer, it's mostly gaming, but I do need to use design software like Adobe, CAD & Revit products.

Get the PSU I linked. 99% of people who "think they will SLI/Crossfire in the future" will never do it. Why? Because when the future hits, it is FAR better to sell your outdated card and buy a single new card than to go hunt for another outdated card to SLI/Crossfire with your current one. The system you specced out as is will barely pull 200 watts.

One more thing: It is not at all uncommon for crap no-name PSUs to have trouble putting out half of their listed wattage.

With that setup all you need a good 450W PSU. The video cards you mentioned doesn't draw that much power. I wouldn't recommend SLI/CF as an upgrade path with these cards, better to buy a single fast card. Personally I would probably choose one around 500W, and a beefier videocard

OP: Quality at a reasonable price is the $20 unit I linked. Your HIVE is not better than it for your use but it costs 3.5x as much and you will suffer lower efficiency to boot. You are not looking for quality at a reasonable price. You are looking for a high-wattage unit (watts you will never need) because I'm guessing it makes you feel better to have a bigger number. The XFX you listed is indeed the best of the lot in quality (by quite a margin) but you went ahead with the HIVE when Zip advised you towards the XFX. The OCZ you listed sucks.

It's your money and your system, so of course spend it however you like. But why do you even bother posting for opinions on a PSU under the pretense of "budget quality" if you don't plan on listening to anything you hear and that isn't even what you really want?

What TemjinGold said... Corsair CX units are good for the price.

OP you should have bought a noname PSU from ebay then painted it pink and wrote "Jiggawutz 9000w" on it. Would have saved you some cash and you would make all the other flashy name big number PSU people jealous :thumbsup:
