I'm planning to buy a diamond engagement ring, and found one I like at Diamond.com. I called them and they seemed knowledgeable.

Does anyone have experience with buying from this company?

Thanks,

Szymon

Nope. I stay away from products that are price fixed by an international monopoly.

Their prices seem to be ok, not especially cheap, but not mall jewelry shop prices, either.

Well, I'm happy with the price I received. I just don't know how
"trustworthy" of a retailer they are, and whether they stand behind their products.

Thanks,

Szymon

I would greatly discourage buying diamonds or other jewlery off the web. You can not appreciate the important characteristics of a stone unless you see it in person. What you need to do is to get knowledgable about the four C's, and realize that in order of importance they go: Cut, Color, and then either Carat / Clarity.

Buying a diamond off the web is like buying an used car without ever test driving one. Greatly discourage it. And remember, mall jewlery stores mark up their diamonds around 1000% and they will negotiate. You just have to be steadfast and don't buy into their bull. Also, don't let them convince you that the color is not that important. They will try and sell you a larger diamond with lower color quality and their lighting will make it look great. Trust me. Your girl will be embarassed later when she compares her stone with someone elses.

Not sure where you live, but I would recommend that you find a Merchandise Mart that is in your part of the country. These are where the jewlery stores go to buy their diamonds. The general public can not get in without knowing somebody - usually. However, call one of the vendors and say that you have purchased from them before and you have X number of dollars to spend today on a ring (dont go unless you are ready to buy) and they will arrange for you to come in and buy. This is what I did and you will be amazed at the value. They will sell you whatever you want, let you pick out the stone before it is mounted, at a jewlery store price (only about 200% mark up). Although I am no longer married, I went to the one in Atlanta, GA and spent $3000 and walked out with an engagement ring, with an appraised value of $8000.00 It has a .85 carat round brilliant stone, and absolutely colorless. With the bagettes, the carat total is 1.5. I will let you know what I sell the ring set for later this month. Going to go to a jewler who purchases estate jewlery.

Unfortunately, store prices seem to be 30% more than the prices on-line.
I also had trouble finding a setting I like in the reputable stores.

Thanks,

Remember, you can negotiate. Especially if the salesperson has not met their quota yet. Also, find a picture of the setting you want and then take it with you when you shop. If they don't have it, then you can either have them order one or use it as a negotiating tool to lower the cost of the ring etc. (get money off for not getting the exact setting you were looking for). BTW, ordering a setting off the web would be nearly as dangerous. Settings are settings. But buying the stone, no way.

Regarding the setting, it would NOT be nearly as dangerous. Settings are settings. But do not buy the stone on-line. Good luck.

Hey, I buy my stone online. Saved me some tax. Most stores will send you the loose stone. You have about 7-14 days to get it appraised. Keep it if you like it, otherwise send it back. You loose out postage money. BTW, no matter where you to choose to buy it, I hope you get it appraised before putting down that chunk of money. Get stones with GIA or AGS cert. Go to diamond talk and ask those that are truely interested in these stuff. Good luck.

[edit] when I talk about apprasial, I mean take the stone to an independent apprasial. Not an apprasial that work for the store where you interested in the stone. [/edit]
