This is a fantastic series for sci-fi fans. Highly recommended. Recommended to me and I had no idea.

I had never heard about Firefly when it was a "current" show...but learned about it a couple of years ago. GOOD show.
Perhaps not "the best show I've ever seen," quality...but fun to watch.

Then again, I also like most of Torchwood, which I didn't start watching until Miracle Day came out, and Haven, which I started watching after the first season.

Tomorrow I lose my Firefly virginity.:sneaky:

Got the complete series as a gift. I definitely look forward to the weekend spent watching those episodes. Then later watch it again, in French! I often find it funny when I watch an English series dubbed in Parisian French. I remember when I was young that Captain Kirk had such a different voice in French.

Great show. Too bad Fox fucked it over.

And you still watched it? Actually I would think most people would have been turned off by Miracle Day. Though if you were introduced to the show by watching Children of Earth you would immediately want to watch the whole series.

Any project affilliated with Joss Whedon or Nathan Fillion, especially both, is worth watching.

Haven't watched it in a couple years, lent my bluray to someone about 6 months ago, still haven't gotten it back. Soon as they're done with it, might have to watch them all again!

Yeah I guess so, but they got their on space ships. No one thought to bring some tractors/motorized vehicles? It seems like we forgot about the wheel in the future.

I think in terms of the story line it made a lot of sense. The events took place well after the initial wave of technology-enabled colonization. Much of the infrastructure of inter-colony commerce had broken down during the war and the conflict that preceded it. Many colonies were poor and simply couldn't maintain a heavy industrial base.

Then again it's also stylistic in a steampunk-ish way. For whatever reason we're attracted to the mix of victorian leather and brass, and high tech.

Really enjoyed Firefly. Watched all episodes and Serenity. Only have the deleted scenes left to watch.

Now I know where the expression "I'll be in my bunk" comes from.

I watched the whole series earlier this year. I didn't immediately love it after watching the 1st 2 or 3 episodes, but because of it's reputation, I stuck with it and watched it all. By the time I reached the end, I found myself really enjoying it.

The random bits of Chinese culture peppered throughout the show really had no explaination.

It was ok. Serenity was much better than the actual show.

Really? You could not deduce from this that the major population center on Earth with massive over population problems might have sought existence elsewhere?

I don't need explanation to tell me that there was an above average size settlement of Germanic people in Pennsylvania to become "Pennsylvania Dutch".

So I was to assume that at the rabbit-like reproduction rate China is going at, that around 500 years into the future their culture would dominate modern civilization?

That or, possibly the Chinese were the early explorers thus their culture caught on for much of the settlements despite the actual race of people.

It was implied that there was only two super powers left on Earth, China and USA. So Chinese language bits would get infused is English, because it was so common. Just like American English has words and phrases from other languages in it.

In retrospect this bit might have been an extra on DVD or some interview. I personally thought it was annoying without subtitles, but not annoying enough to think too much about it. Push comes to shove, I would think Russia would reassert itself before China takes over its roll, but whatever.

The random bits of Chinese were generally meant to represent profanity, so including subtitles would have just ruined the effect; this was on broadcast TV, mind you, so swearing was explicitly forbidden. If you include subtitles, I no longer get to assume that Mal just told someone to "fuck off" in Chinese.

Like most people, I saw this on DVD, not broadcast. No such restriction there. It would have been a nice option to have, especially when you hear the literal translations of some of the dialogue.

Ahahahaha, hilarious.

Hehe. The episode after that took place in a sci fi convention, and there was a few Firefly references in it as well.

I was actually late to the Firefly world. I saw Serenity in the theater, and even after that had no idea it was from a TV show, it was 2-3 years later before I actually watched Firefly. Was sad it got cancelled so early.

That's just a convention you have to live with when discussing broadcast TV shows. You'd think that detectives and criminals would have slightly rougher language than what you see in Law & Order or CSI; it's amazing how not once has a criminal been uncouth enough to say "fuck" on either of those shows. That's the nature of the beast. Personally, I'm glad they didn't change it once they made the transition to home video; I'm much more in favor of keeping the original intact, even if it's just down to an omission of subtitles. Knowing "what" is said in Chinese is irrelevant; it's the "how" that matters. The subtitles would simply distract from that, especially if it turns out they were just speaking nonsense to mask the fact that they couldn't swear.
