I am not a serious fisherman, but it can be a really good stress reliever for me. Just grab a couple beers and relax.

i used to fish of the rocks at the beach when i was a kid. I used to catch mostly crappy mackerel. My cool catches were a huge spider crab, octopus, and little shark

Not sure what type of mackerel you have in California, but Spanish Mackerel is awesome. They strike hard, fight like crazy, and are delicious.

Yes, Missouri has lots of good fishing lakes. Father-in-law owns a rainbow trout hatchery too.

I fish in Manitoba and also down in the Gulf of Mexico depending on the season. I walleye fish in my local city lakes and also in Northern Wisconsin.

All I remember is that they smelled very bad and that they were very slimy. But I agree they fought very hard. One of my friends caught one with a jalapeno from his chili fries...lol

I still can't eat mackerel to this day either. Nor mussels because that was the stinky bait we used to use

is it hard to ice fish

I'm not sure what kind of question this is but I think once the ice is strong enough for a vehicle it's no different than fishing out of a boat just MUCH MUCH colder.

Understanding lake structure and what fish like to eat you can find them no problem. Getting them to bite is another issue.

~20 years ago, I was in Chesapeake, VA and went fishing at a small lake w/ some friends. Used some leftover Thanksgiving ham as bait and I've never seen catfish jump on the hook so fast. People still laugh when I tell them I used ham that day -- turned out to be one of the best fishing excursions ever!

Ice fishing looks... cold.

I'll take the warm Gulf when it's about as flat as a lake for some lazy fishing. Gotta feed my friends too.

is it hard to ice fish

Apparently it is. If I was targeting crappie and only had a handful of them after an hour or two, I'd head back to shore with the boat. I can't figure out the allure of ice fishing - seems the action is incredibly slow compared to fishing open water (with knowledge of structure, baits, etc.)
