@purebeast-

No need to spend 100 on a reel. If you want to stick with shimano I suggest the "sedona" flavor. Very smooth drag and affordable.. You could almost buy two for the price of the top tier ones. Make sure you sync the reel up with the appropriate rod... A mismatch will result in skewed results.

Goodluck and do some more research on dedicated fishing forums.

Happy fishing.

ah okay thanks for that info. i did not realize that the stradic was for those huge types of fish. i have heard of those other brands of reels too however since i've had good experience with shimano, i think i'll just stick to it.

as far as spending $100 on a reel, well i'm more into fishing now than i was a while ago and go pretty much 1-2 times a week now, sometimes more. i'd like to get a nicer reel since i can afford it and will be using it often. i'm just a little confused as to what exactly the extra money will get you. i'm hoping that it will get me a further cast and just an all around nicer feel. although i gotta say, my current $40 shimano solstace 2500fj reel still feels nice. i do wish it could cast further though.

i'm thinking i may get that shimano symetre one. it's pretty light weight and middle-of-the-pack price wise. there is also a 30% coupon at sports authority this week and i may run to one after work today or tomorrow and see if they have it in stock. i'm still confused as to what size to get though. like that one reel comes in a variety of sizes, and other than holding more line, the physical weight and i guess heavier drag weight, i don't know what the difference is. but if that is the only difference then i guess i do know the differences

Check Dick's Sporting Goods in your area for a BOGO free on some fishing line. I'm not sure if it was just in Kansas City, but yesterday I got two 150yd spools of Power Pro moss green 10lb and 15lb braided line for $17.xx. I love this line and it's even sweeter for that price.

okay so i ended up getting a new reel tonight. ended up with this one.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...M?tag=at055-20

there was a 30% off coupon at sports authority today that i saw on slickdeals, so i ran to one near me and they had 1 of those left. that was the one i was interested in so i ended up getting it for $77 after coupon. i also got some line, and they ended up taking 30% off my whole order instead of just the one item. so it was nice to get reel + line for $87 out the door.

i'm gonna spool the line tonight i think. i was just wondering, when spooling, how do you know how much line you have put onto the spool? it says i can get 200yds of this 10lb test on there, but i bought like 320yds or whatever is on it. i wanna try and get this right since it's a nicer reel to me and i want it to be in the best position as possible when i'm using it.

there's usually a fill line/mark on the spool. don't go past it and you'll be ok.

oh ok cool. i've never really paid attention when i've spooled my other reel. i would just do it till it "looked" like there was enough line on it lol.

You'll learn, just like you'll learn what you want from a reel. You want the spool pretty full, as in 1/8 inch. Likely more on a spinning reel, but I'm a baitcaster guy. More as in more clearance from the line to the rim of your spinning reel.

Oh, and don't spool it backwards or your line will get constantly twisted (why I hate spinning reels). The orientation of the line as it comes off the new pack is crucial as you spool your reel. Google and youtube it.

On the topic of picking up line from Dicks, that shit has been sitting on the shelf for years. Don't be surprised if you have trouble with it. Not you purbeast, just I don't trust their stock. Believe it or not Walmart has good turnover if you don't have another option.

Hey, did I mention don't spool your reel backwards?

i'm not even sure what you mean "spool it backwards"? i didn't realize you can spool the wrong way?

and to be honest the places i got my stuff at (sports authority) the line has probably been sitting for a while lol.

Google how to fill a spinning reel, I have to do it every time because I'm not a spinning reel guy. You want to take the line off in the same direction as your bail is wrapping it around your spool. The line has a good amout of memory so don't fight againt that memory.

Man, I wish I could take you out sometime.

OOOOOHHH now i see exactly what you are saying. basically spool it so it curves the same way it was curved on the spool that you are moving it from. that makes total sense. absolutely no clue if i did that or not on my prior one lol.

i'm getting better though! i'm going back to the same spot that my "catfish hunter" (grumpier old men reference) got away from me being a noob yesterday. i literally was having trouble sleeping last night thinking about it

Funny story from my fishing buddies on their trip. They were both using a drop shot with live bait and artificial.

One guy used a loop knot, the other guy a regular palamar knot on the hook.

The tight knot landed 15 fish, the loop knot not a single bite.

Line and knots matter. Presentation matters.

There's only a few things that cause line twist on a spinning reel...

1) Spooled backwards
2) Old line with lots of memory
3) Combination of both (ask me how I know, had to re-spool on the boat to help a buddy and give him a spare reel and line that was old in my box)

respool your reels every year, or suffer the consequences.

I have no idea what kinda knot i tie, like as far as the name goes. i do it where i wrap the end around it like 4x, then i put the end through the hoop, then back through the hoop created from that. then i pull down on the hook and the knot tightens.

Clinch knot. Classic, strong, good for mono. Go for 5-6 times around and fair the knot well.

got smartphone? get "what knot" from Columbia.

just did some googling and watched some videos on how to spool correctly. so i made sure to put it on the right way and not backwards. it's very simple to figure that out heh but i had no clue that was the correct way to spool em.

i was having some trouble finding exactly how much to put on the spool but i think i did it correctly, so i took a pic.

http://i.imgur.com/NmfPRr8.jpg

most things said 1/8" to the edge of the spool, but i didn't know if it meant where the top of the spool started to taper, or to where the bottom part (that isn't tapered) is 1/8" from the edge. so i saw some pics and i think it meant to the edge of the top, after the taper, which looks like it lines up with the bottom edge as well.

so does that pic look like i did an okay job as far as the amount to put on? or is it too much, or even too little?

can't WAIT to take this out this weekend though! probably gonna go to the same spot i went to last night, afer work, with some more spinner baits.

Stradics are NOT salt water specific reels by any means. They're salt water approved, but most of the sizes of the reels are more suited for fresh water. Of course, you can use the larger sizes, like the 6000 and 8000 for surf fishing.

I've got a Stradic 2500FJ on a Team Daiwa rod and I'd no more that that combo saltwater fishing than I would use my Lexus GX in a demolition derby. It just isn't substantial enough to handle anything you may encounter in salt. It's my wife's all around bass rod/reel combo. Darned smooth reel. If you can foot the cost, I'd really look at it. A direct alternative would be the Stradic CI4 series, a carbon framed reel of the same capacities.

If you want to research Shimano spinning reels, begin with Shimano:
http://www.shimano.com/publish/content/global_fish/en/us/index/products/reels/spinning.html

All I can tell you is after decades of buying reels in spinning and baitcasting varieties, Shimano and Daiwa are my go-to first choices.

i've always had luck catching catfish with chicken liver. it can be hard to get that stuff to stay on the hook though because it's so soft.

Use a very thin sewing thread and tie it in place. I hear mackeral is good also because it's so stinky.

yeah i just always never had anything with me to do that lol. i always thought about just using some fishing line to tie around it, but i was just too lazy to setup the bait like that.

I've got the itch to go fishing but living in the city doesn't help. The conservation department stocks catfish but there are too many ppl around and you can't fish at night. I may check out the local Cabela's and Bass Pro Shops' boards to see if there is anybody looking for a fishing buddy for the day. Unfortunately I do not know any boat owners near my area and options are limited.

Went fishing back home in Minnesota this past weekend at a lake in the Twin Cities metro area. I got a couple of very small largemouth bass, about 1.5lbs. The thing below then hit my friend's crankbait hard. Thought it was a snakehead. Turns out it was a bowfin. Still one nasty fish.

Jeebus what kinda fish is that bottom one? the jaw looks weird on it almost like it can dislocate it to get longer range.

anyways, caught my first bass on a buzzbait this past friday.

http://i.imgur.com/Uz0zCEb.jpg?1

i didn't measure it but it was pretty damn big, one of the bigger basses i've ever caught. i'd guess it was about 18" or so. i've never caught anything with a top water lure so it was pretty damn neat to see a fish hit it at the surface for my first time.
