Love the top water action when it hits! The thing that sucks is the window to use them is so small, usually right around when the sun rises or sets. Another great top water lure is the weedless buzz frog. It has the action of a buzzbait, but will go through some nice patches of grass and weed without any problems. Use a #2 wide gap hook, toss and reel in and watch the action.

caught this this morning with a spinner bait. measured 17" long. it's got blood going down the side because it was hooked pretty deep, but the hook came out very easily and he swam off no problems.

i also caught another one not quite as big, but it was a very neat colored bass it like had tiger stripes near it's head. not sure what kinda bass it was but it looked really cool. don't know why i didn't snap a pic of it.

No idea where you are, but peacock bass (the one with stripes)?

nah it's not those. i'm in MD and i just googled them and definitely not that. the stripes were actually more of a 45 degree angle right at the head area than vertical on the whole body, but it was like just around the head area. it was in the potomac river that borders md/va and runs to dc, if that matters as far as naming the fish. it might have been a small/large mouth bass for all i know but it definitely had a different color pattern.

I just don't get it. That desire to fish. I mean why?
Unless its the opportunity for some guys to escape the wife and kids for a few hours, plus drinking beer?
Looks too boring for me.
I'd rather lay out on a lawn chair and read a book, or bike, or hike, or walk, or ring neighborhood doorbells then run and hide.
Caller-ID, sadly, has pretty much killed off making obscene phone calls.

What gets me are housewives that go fishing, alone during the day, for hours.
I know of a few.

I just don't get it either. Not fishing. But idiots such as yourselves that go out of your way to exert the time and effort to post in a thread that you don't care about and have nothing to add. Here's an idea - go read a book, or bike, or hike, or walk, or ring bells rather than tell us all how you don't like to fish. Pro tip - nobody in this thread that does like to fish cares about what you prefer to do instead.

Went out and threw some Sizmic toads this evening and landed a puny one. I had a huge one come up and strike the toad, but didn't swallow it.

Also saw this thing. That's a 4" toad right next to that thing. *shudder*

another great weekend with the fam.

we caught 2 redfish, about 6 - 8 spanish mackerel, about 6 - 8 trout, and an assortment of non-eating fish (jacks, blue runners, catfish, etc.)

threw my big 8' net yesterday evening and caught about 15 huge mullet. never did anything with them before other than use for bait, but experimenting tonight and smoking 6 of them to make some fish dip. We shall see.

Wife took a few pics of the fish... will need to download from camera and see if any good.

Anyone from Florida here have any tips on fishing from piers.. docks.. beach.. etc? I have some experience on deep sea fishing boats but I have very little to no experience from shore down here.

About to make an order from amazon. Not sure what hooks to get.. or what line, sinkers, lures.

Located in the Bradenton, Sarasota area.

I'd call the deep sea boats and just ask them or the pier. Fishing on the beach is complicated in most parts down there.

Tend to agree. I could probably write a book on beach fishing based on 1 - 2 hours south of where he's going to be, but that book is probably entirely different for where he is. It also depends on the season, month, day, tide, water clarity, waves, bait availability, time of day, etc.

If you're just looking for the most basic of advice... put something alive (shrimp, sand flea, whitebait) on a small/medium circle hook, about 2 - 3 feet of leader, 1/2 oz weight (depending on waves), throw it out, and wait.

i just went out and got me one of the sling bag tackle bags to try out instead of lugging my tackle box around all the time. this is the tackle box i currently have.

http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p...Id=4008891&cp=4406646.4413993.4414792.4418212

it's kind of annoying to carry it like a mile or so when i have to walk to one of the fishing spots i go to. especially when i'm carrying a water or drink and my fishing pole. and then carrying it when i have to go down this steep hill to the bank is annoying too.

ended up getting this here.

http://reviews.dickssportinggoods.c...ox-sling-pack-reviews/reviews.htm?sort=rating

i primarily use softbaits so i can toss them into one of the big zipper pockets. then it came with one of those boxes with some splits in them. i'll use that for hooks and weights. then i got 2 smaller ones to put my spinner baits and jigs in. going to try it out tomorrow so hopefully it works out well.

so yeah having that bag was MUCH nicer on my hike to the spot. it's about a mile walk so it was nice to have it over my shoulder and have hands free, then it's steep to walk down to the bank where i was fishing.

so anyone know what kind of bass this is? this is the kind i was talking about that had tiger like stripes on it's head. is this just some type of small mouth bass? caught 3 of them today, with this being the 2nd one that was not as large the biggest one i caught.

http://i.imgur.com/eETFX0q.jpg?1

here's the area i was fishing. it's running really shallow/slow now, which is nicer because sometimes it's so fast that you can't fish and the water has absolutely no visibility and is just brown/murky. like you can't even see an inch in it when it's running real fast.

and wow that video looks blurry as shit.

caught the biggest bass i've ever caught today! went out at 5:30 for like an hour, and caught a 12" or so 2nd cast. then 2 casts later i landed this beast. i didn't have my measure with me since i just didn't put it in my new tackle box, which blows, but this thing was WWWAAYYY bigger than the 19" bass i've caught before. if i had to guess i'd say it was about 2 feet long, or like 22" or so. possibly bigger. it was pretty damn heavy too. it put up a GREAT fight too, and i knew it was big as soon as it started pulling. and when it was fighting, i saw motion on top of the water quite a ways away from where my line was going in the water, so i knew the tail was far from the tip of the line.

awesome fish! caught it on a 5" purple yamamoto as you can see on the first pic.

Mullet run is in full swing down here. Pods of mullet getting crushed by huge tarpon, jacks, and sharks. Trying to find some time this week to head to the beach and catch a few.
