How do you guys usually cook your fish?

I don't have a grill or id try that but I usually dip in flour, egg, then either panko bread crumbs or Italian bread crumbs and fry it up in coconut oil.. mmmm tasty!

Here's a pic of a Bonnethead shark I caught a while ago. Actually tasted pretty decent

Kinda depends on the fish. For 'thicker' fish like that snook you caught, redfish, grouper, etc. - I tend to prefer baking them whole (gutted of course) with a light drizzle of lemon, salt, and herbs.

For 'thin' fish like snapper, spanish mackerel, etc., either sauteed with butter or lightly coated (be it panko, tempura, etc.) and fried up.

I'll occasionally smoke or grill a thicker fish, but it's more of a pain than the other cooking methods. Unless I'm making smoked kingfish dip or something like that, I usually refrain from the smoker.

For the shark, my family that lives on the Gulf usually cuts them into 'steaks' and from what I recall, soaks them in milk overnight to reduce some of the strong flavor. Then I think they grill or bake them.

Yeah the one time I tried smoking the Spanish Mackerel he was over 3 feet, I cut him in section and tried to smoke it, might have worked for dip.

Plenty of mullet over here, but most do it with a cast net and smoke em for dip.

I've never tried but probably should, they are good eating even just smoked and eaten like salmon.

I'd heard similar about shark, though I've never tried to eat one personally. Is about like wild game up north, Deer etc.

For fillets which was the usual, Grouper of course, and Sea Bass, Grunts are good, and from my experience in the past Redfish and Sheep head along bridges and in flats in close.

Now and then you might even get something odd in some bridge areas.

I'd never pass on a Grunt, or Sea Bass Fillet cooked up nicely

I seriously need to start fishing again on the weekends now and then.

caught my first shark ever this past week on a deep sea fishing trip.

http://i.imgur.com/yCL796M.jpg

was about 3ft long. about to cook up the rest of it on the grill shortly here. we had 4 sharks like that total and 1 big grouper that was about 3 feet long too. also had a bunch of black bass and other smaller fish. we had a sailfish on the line while trolling however the hook never set and the first mate said chances are the hook never made it to the mouth and the bait was just in the snout. the hit and run on the bait, as well as the way the bait looked told the story.

Can't even try going fishing lately, getting too tired out.

Went to work today for 6 hours they want me to come in tomorrow on Sunday too.

Non stop work is gonna kill me yet

Took the kids out Friday in Islamorada on their first fishing boat trip. Was not super impressed with the boat as we went to 4 spots all in less than 25 feet of water (I was hoping to go out deeper). Caught a few nice snapper and a bunch of grunts - made for a nice fish fry tonight.

one of my all time favorite memories. 25 years ago.

casting crank baits on upper Mississippi

I make a lousy ass cast out into the middle of the river

My dad grits his teeth and in a very stern, scolding voice says "CAST PARALLEL TO SHORE"

As I'm reeling in my lousy cast, I get a hit.

BAM 5lb walleye hooked right in the mouth, netted, in the boat.

Man, I just started taunting "parallel to shore nananana" haha

Was in Alaska a week ago flossing for sockeye in the Russian River. Took me a day to get the hang of the flop-action casting that they do, but finally limited on my 3rd day.

did a lot of fishing this weekend. today i did really good at my normal lake with my bread and butter lures (senko 5" junebug). caught 3 nice bass in about 2 hours, all over like 14" long. this is the 2nd largest largemouth i've ever caught. the double big gulp cup is 9.5" tall and this fish was just over 2x the height of it, so probably like 20" or so.

I caught this pike about 100 yards from my house in CT last week.

Went back to the lake Thursday for 4 days of fishing (plus an annual boat party). Tried to help the in-laws catch some bass - sent them to my favorite spots; I pulled in a few minutes later when they didn't catch anything from their boat off one point, I pulled in 8 bass; 6 of which were 15" or longer, within 15 or 20 minutes. wife got 3, all of them 15 or longer. (15" is minimum legal size on the lake; we compete for who catches the most legal sized bass.) Sent the in-laws over to another point off another island with very similar bottom features. Let them fish for a little while before moving in for the kill. They seemed somewhat disappointed that they couldn't catch them. Overall, a pretty good time fishing; the in-laws finally got a few bass, wife and I got bored of bass & switched to catching pan fish (targeted crappie, caught one crappie to every 10 sunfish. Those little sunfish destroy my crappie jigs though.)

why do you have to whack the fish in the head?

Because they don't have knees?

Heh. Seriously though, you don't want big fish dancing on the deck, that's how your gear gets fucked up and your friends or customers get slashed and broken feet. Tuna and anything with a bill will usually get the fish bat if it's being kept.

My step dad worked for Frank Mundus for awhile chasing bluefin back in the day (Peter's Benchley's inspiration for Quint), and that crazy fuck preferred a horse pistol to a leaded fish bat. He'd shoot a tuna in the head from the tower, and without any heads up to the mate below who was trying to grab the leader and set up a gaff. That's how they parted company. Mundus did exactly that, which resulted in my step dad quitting as soon as they hit the dock, then drilling him in the face with a haymaker before disembarking for the last time. Hated the guy so much he walked away from money Frank still owed him.

I say forget the bats and guns altogether. You land a monster who might still be a little green; instead of spraying the inside of the boat with blood and fish slime, grab a Coke, Slice, Mountain Dew, whatever from the cooler and pour it over the gills. Stone cold dead in seconds, it's a like death ray for fish.

I never really fished but I envy those who do. Excellent hobby and time spent in nature. Plus you get free organic fish.

Wife went running today in a 10K NYCRun in Brooklyn. I went with her. It was in Bay Ridge and I saw people fishing at the pier. What's disgusting is that there's a water treatment center next to this pier and it specifically says that, during rainfall, the water may be untreated. Yet these people are fishing that. Gross.

Went out with a couple of friends for some night fishing last night. Couldn't ask for better weather/seas. Cool air and flat ocean - stayed out far too late (3:30 a.m. or so) but the fish were biting and it was good company. Got some nice snapper for dinner. Going out again tomorrow morning - hopefully catch some dolphin or tuna.

I did not read all the posts. Grew up in an anglers household...have fished bass, crappie, brim, jacks(saugers), my whole life...Dad and my brother have fired up the crappie fishing these nights, now that its dropped into the 40's...they will keep it going until March or so, the colder the better...Dad makes a lot of his own stuff, worms, jigs, even has the lead molds to pour what he want...Tried to get him to sell them on Ebay... his response...then everybody will have them. Guy has cases and drawers full of all kinds of custom made stuff, died, molded, for each season and fish..
