so it's that time of year where i need to get some new fishing line and asking agian for recommendation in this thread. i plan on going to dicks tonight after work to reup on my gary yamamoto senko worms and plan to get some new line as well.

i'm primarily going after bass that are like 10"-20" long and wondering what line would be best for that. i'm giving the length so people can ballpark the weight. this is both large mouth and small mouth.

i'm also wondering if people can give me pointers on how to rig up a "jig" type of rig. i typically either just use normal texas rig or whacky, but i've never used the jig head type of hooks (although i have a couple) and i would like to learn how to use them and fish them because i hear people have good luck with those as well.

I haven't fished since I was a kid, but my girlfriend has been pushing to go. Hopefully I can retain my manliness while trying to take the hooks out of their mouths.

hooked a very large cat fish while fishing for little bass around the dock in my local lake/pond. He was about the size of my leg and easily as thick as my thigh. I was dragging my little worm across the bottom when my line shot left under the dock. My 8lb. line stretched as much as it would go and i could hear the tink tink tink of the stretch. Knowing i wouldnt land him, i fought the best i could. got him up to the dock and his head out of the water enough to reach down and almost lip him just in time for the final TINK of my line snapping.

so there is a very large, very pissed off blue cat at the bottom of the lake with my hook stuck in him. poor guy.

wish i was in a better spot where i could have just drug him onto the shore.

catfish are fun until you get them out of the water. unless of course you plan to cook and eat them. gonna say a good 50% of my fishing injuries are directly related to catfish.

Most hooks will eventually rust out fairly quick. cant say the same if the line somehow got threaded in there.

I think I told you, avoid dicks for fishing line unless you consistently see it gone/re-stocked.

For the fish you're targeting a 1/8 jig head or shaky head is good with 10 pound mono or 17 pound fluro (i'd lean fluro)

If you're throwing a big ass 1/4 jig with a trailer then that's something different. The key is are you getting bites? The bigger the line the more they can see it, use the lightest line you can get away with - that's where the fluro comes in. And jig fishing you need no stretch, again - fluro or braid with a mono leader.

Jig/worm fishing is about finesse. Should take you 3-5 minutes to get that lure back to the boat if not longer. twitch-twich, fall, twitch-twich, fall. Slow fish it. VERY slow.

Weedless style with a wide gap hook and senko is where it's at. Sometimes I use an O-ring and do it wacky style so the worm lasts a bit longer. I also am so used to braided that I can't use any other line with my baitcaster. I use 10lb Power Pro braided, which works very well.

If you want early morning bass action, use some topwater lures like a weedless frog or a buzz bait if you're fishing the edge of the weed line. The awesomeness of a huge strike as you drag the lure across the steamy, calm morning water is pure bliss.

Except when them dumb mofos miss the lure completely.

I miss maybe 30 percent top water hits. And it's not me. I slow walk them.

A spook or spitting image is all I do on top.

I got a couple of alligator gar last night. It was nice because both cut the line with their teeth as I was pulling them out of the water. All of the fun with none of the stabbing.

There are more variables though - you fishing weedy areas? Fishing along a rocky bottom? In more open water, not too thick of weeds, I prefer 6 lb line. The only things that break off are large northern pike, and I think it's mostly due to their toothy mouths. I've easily landed 5 pound and larger bass (22" plus). But, if I'm in the thick stuff, I want at least 10-12 pound line.

Damn! I was going to stop at Dick's on my way home from taking the boat to my son this weekend. If I knew they were on sale, I wouldn't have changed my mind at the last second. He's already at the lake, and from the looks of the pictures, has a sizable lead on me for large bass.

Its real, thats why I had my other hand supporting the hand holding it.

Impressive fish. Good work. I should note that I've been fishing since I was little and I think the biggest fish I've ever caught was about five pounds.

Not me, but my younger son did well this evening. Fished for about 4 hours, 30 largemouth and smallmouth bass. Kept 4 for dinner. Almost all were caught on senkos. He went through 4 or 5 colors without a single hit; on the next color, he had a field day. (And no, I won't say which color(s), but coincidentally, I happened to grab 4 packs of that color when they were on sale at Kmart a couple weeks ago.) Due to all the rain, everyone at the lake we go to is complaining about how the fishing is really slow. You've just got to know where to look. My little fishing secret: you'd be amazed at how many bass will sit in 6-8 inches of water with lily pads or other weeds covering the surface. Everyone seems to fish the weed edge between the weeds and deeper water. Often neglected is the weed edge very close to shore where wave action along the shoreline creates a very narrow channel. Toss a senko 12" from shore, and BAM.

Plus, picked up a couple of pike using a spinner

damn those are some nice sized fish too!

why won't you say what color though?

Minimum legal size on the lake we fish at is 15". Usually if I keep any for dinner (which is rare - usually I'll go out in the afternoon for panfish & filet up a crapload of crappie & sunfish) I aim for about 16-17". If you could have seen the look on the people's faces last year when I brought in a 6 pound bass (huge for the north) for a picture, then released it off the end of the dock... "If you don't want it, we'll take it!!!!!!!!" I prefer catch & release for bass though.

And, I suppose, since most people who know me and where I fish don't follow my posts on here, it was the shad laminate (sort of a purple & black). That, blue, green, green with flecks, blue with flecks, black, red, and purple with flecks provide enough variety that I usually connect on one of those colors. I try yellow, bubblegum, and a couple other colors every now & then & can't recall ever catching anything with those weird colors.

I always find it fascinating that different colors work better in different areas and even different days. Around my section of Ohio ive been having great luck with Pumpkinseed colored worms of all types.

Pumpkinseed - a color I forgot to include in my list above, though it rarely, if ever, outcatches the other colors. My favorite times are when I have a small group of kids on the boat, teaching them how to fish. (Not how to cast out a snoopy pole with a bobber & hook with worm.) It's fun to set up all their tackle for them, identical everything except the color. As soon as one kid gets one, I note the color. A couple years ago, 2 kids in a row caught nice bass (like in the picture) consecutively with the same color. I switched everyone to that color. It was pretty exciting for me to have 3 kids simultaneously reeling in big bass - I can't even imagine how exciting it was for the kids whose previous biggest fish were 6" sunfish and perch.

The different days makes sense, different amounts of water clarity, etc. It seems backwards to me, but most of the time in more stained water, I do better with darker colors, but in clearer water & sun, I do better with lighter colors.

yeah i have a variety of different colored senkos too and i usually can find one that is hot for that day.

overall, the best luck i've had is with the white pearl, junebug, baby bass colored (dark green on top, white on the bottom), and this past weekend i got a new watermelon mix that is like dark orange/red/brown on the top and lighter version of that on the bottom.

i have a TON of other colors too, but those are the ones i've had the most luck with. if i could only pick 1 color to go out with, it would be the white pearl ones probably. with junebug 2nd.

when i'm out with a buddy we will fish different colors for like 10 minutes or so and if we don't get a hit, we try new colors. and we keep doing that until we find something that works, then both get on the same one. usually after catching a couple on the same color it will go complete cold and we'll have to try a new color.
