Have to choose now between them for undergrad. I'm looking to be a public policy major.
What are your likes and dislikes?
Is your school geared towards specific types of people or skill set? Challenging? What do you major in?

edit: At NW I was accepted at the School of Education and Social Policy which only has 260 kids and only 40 enrolled last year, with 22 full-time faculty. I had no idea it was so small

Northwestern's in Illinois I believe. I have a few friends who went/are going there. It's in the cornfields, that's for sure, but they seem to enjoy it.

Edit: ok, I confused myself. The cornfields comment was referring to purdue. Never actually been to Northwestern, but again, the people who I know from there have enjoyed it.

I'm at Northwestern right now and I'm enjoying it. Chicago's a great city and is just an el ride away. Campus is right on lake Michigan. Your profile says you are in CA, there's quite a few people from there that go here.

Cool.
I'm actually from Boston, MA, but working in the Bay Area for a year.

US news rankings has Northwestern at 12 and Vandy at 18 if you are into that stuff.

Either school is a good choice.

my bro attends northwestern med school. he went to northwestern undergrad for 3 years, and loved it, BUT, he's now SICK of it. He's sick of the cold, and can't wait to finish med school to go back to CA, or any other warmer, dry state.

Not sure if that is really applicable as I got into schools other than the A&S college.

Also, anyone know what the frat scene is like? I don't plan on joining any frats and whatnot, but would still like to know.

Both schools are large, prestigious institutions, and they will have something for everyone. Neither is a bad choice.

The Northwestern name will go further, generally speaking. Vanderbilt is a great school, but it's reputation goes further in the south than in the rest of the country.

If I were you, I'd figure out which school's Public Policy department is better, and go there. If Southeastern Mississippi State Baptist College had the best Public Policy department in the country, that's where you would want to go if you intended on studying Public Policy. There are rankings for Public / Social Policy, you may want to check them out.

For the record, I went to Northwestern for my MS in Mech Eng and loved it. I was accepted into Vanderbilt for undergrad, but I did not end up going there.

Does US News have ranking for specific majors like this?

I liked Gordon when he was here (Ohio State). Does he still wear bow ties?

More on topic, where's the poll?

I am currently a junior at Vanderbilt....I absolutely love it. I am a PSCI/Hist double major btw. The campus is beautiful, the student body is just the right size imo (I think like ~6k total), and it is close enough to downtown nashville to do stuff down there. It definitely has a somewhat "southern/frat" atmosphere (I think it was playboy that said we were one of the best dressed campuses and had one of the most attractive female student populations), but the people for the most part are really cool. Also, there is just about something for everyone here, be it frats, sororities, sports, clubs, model UN, etc, etc.

The financial aid can also be quite substantial, but not sure how that figures for you. Also, the weather is nice (if you like the whole 4 seasons thing). I highly reccomend vandy....give me a pm/email @ soldatREMOVE@gmail.com if you have any more questions, etc.

EDIT:

As for challenging, it is very much so. While the parties here can be ridiculous (grey goose, over the top themes...one frat brings in Vanilla Ice, etc,), the students are for the most part very driven, and there is a definitely a competitive atmosphere. Also, unlike some schools, there is no grade inflation here, so that makes it even harder.
