Registry "cleaning" will end up doing more damage than it helps in virtually every case.

Not necessarily. Plus most of these applications will save your registry before you do anything.

So it may not damage your system, but it definately won't help it. There's no measurable performance gain that results from a registry clean.

I was going to say that, but I'm tired of injecting that into every registry cleaner discussion. I feel like a broken record :^D

doesn't stop that one guy from spouting off in every disk defrag thread.

so, go right ahead, answer the question no one asked.

So it's a bad thing to tell people when they're wasting their time and sometimes money?

"Doing nothing" is more free than "doing something useless" so I think that does perfectly answer the original question: "what's the best free registry cleaner?" The answer is: Nothing. Doing absolutely nothing is the best free registry cleaner. It's 100 times more efficient than any other free registry cleaner available.

Edit: And it has a larger support community of developers and users than all other registry cleaner's combined. If doing nothing fails you, you can always find someone else to help you do nothing.

CCLeaner is a little lame, it doesn't do much more than deleting a few unused entries.
I would say JV16 - but it does NOT run on my W7, it goes into an endless scanning loop.

Last I heard, that cost between $50 and $400 or so (depending on who purchased it.)

Just sayin'...

That's why most people re-use the one they've already purchased

I was going to try to clean my registry but there's no point in it if it won't help.

What other things should I look at to figure out why my PC has slowed to a crawl in the last month.

I've ran Adaware and Kaspersky Anti-Virus and they show that the PC is okay.

Check your HD for errors
Make sure you don't have too much unnecessary garbage starting with Windows
Defrag
I've found that having less than 20% free space on the HD slows the machine down
If your drives are PATA, make sure they're in DMA mode, not PIO
