I just can't decide whether I should ditch my old 19" crt in favor of a shiny new lcd.

I already set my eyes on a brand new SM 710T / N
yet,I keep changing my mind.

for me is not important If I play with 100 fps or 75 fps (say lcds are limited to 75hz).
but people just keep saying response time is not good enough for fps games
(HL 2, Doom3 )

Any heavy gamers here use lcds ? I'd like to hear your opinion.

i have a iiyama prolite, 17inch 16ms response, i find it pretty good for games, of course dark games would look better on a CRT, but its fine. UT2004 on this monitor is very nice, very vibrant and colourful. Nvidias digital vibrance control helps alot too. 90% of the time theres zero ghosting, and tearing. tho sometimes i get the occasional tearing which is pretty bad, but never noticed ghosting as such

of course though, if you have the space to keep a CRT (i dont) then keep the CRT, you wont regret keeping a 19inch CRT if your gaming. doom3 looked well better on my friends Dell CRT (basically a rebadged sony trinitron, apature grill display) it went all the way to 1600x1200 on a 17inch dispaly!, flat screen too, and he showed me doom3 16x12 on it.....fantastic.

and with LCD's if you wanna use a res higher than 12x10 your going to have to spend a fair bit, so get say a dell FP2001 or whatever it is. the 20.1 inch LCD.

19ich LCDs use 12x10 as do 17inchers

i assume you can go higher with that 19inch CRT?

I ditched my 19" CRT for a 17" Philips 16ms screen...

Overall its sharper, and it doesnt ghost except when you really want to notice it. I mean strategy games where you scroll really fast are womehat ghosty. But FPS games work well enough...However I would go with a 19" now.

I use a 21" ViewSonic P810. A comparable 20" LCD is, what, like $1,500? The prices have gone down quite alot on LCDs but not quite enough. Besides, you need a CRT if you're a serious gamer because you can switch resolutions without any streaking or ghosting.

I'm a big gamer and I love the 12ms. Samsung 710t. Ghosting is few and far between and the colors are decent. Can you see ghosting if you look for it? yes. Can you see ghosting if you're playing the game? no. that's my take on it.

I have an old CTX PR960F for about 5.5 years now...That's a lot even for a monitor

I can go as high as 1600x1200 @85Hz...
but it tends to get out of focus more frequent than it used to.

Anywayz I never used it for such an high setting, I usually play games at 12x10 MAX.

I could really use the extra place on my desk , yet I can't help thinking maybe it's worth waiting for a few more months to have lcd's match crt response time.

Edit :

I just saw someone here talking about this :

improved ver of the 710T with 8MS ?

I love my Hyundai Image Quest L90D+. After getting this, I will never go back to another CRT unless I have no choice and do not regret going LCD in any way, shape, or form.

i have a sony sdm-hs73, a superior 17 inch lcd monitor. it lags when playing games, but i also cannot stnad the flicker of crts and the intense glare of the glass. but if your a real heavy gamer stay with a crt at a high refresh rate (mine tops out at 60 hz)

dell 2005fpw

i find LCDs superior in every important way.

i have no ghosting and i think the technology is just better than CRT by far.

i've never heard of anyone leaving a nice LCD for a CRT
except for that one kid who was legally blind.. but he was wierd anyway

I use a Samsung 912N as I couldn't pass on the value of this lcd. I game at 12x10@70. I just finished HL2 and I have had no problems with ghosting that I can tell.

I have a 25ms 190s Samsung 19" LCD. Ghosting is noticable, so is tearing. I have to enable Vsync in every game I play in order not to see tearing. One thing about LCD's is that in order to get a good visual experience, you have to play at the native res. 12x10 is a pretty high res for newer games, which means you will need to have at least a mid-range video card or better.

Overall CRT's are cheaper, and more versatile in that you can freely change res without decreasing quality and you don't have to worry about ghosting. Tearing is also not to bad on CRT's. LCD's tend to have more vibrant colors and are much easier on your eyes, causing less eye strain. So there are tradeoffs.

I'm also in the market for a new monitor. I'm leaning towards getting a 19"CRT. Although the Hyundai looks pretty good too. I'll probably check em both out at my local B&M before I buy.

I am on a Dell 2001FP, 20", 16ms, and I see no ghosting at all. Native resolution is 1600x1200 @ 60hz. I love this monitor .

I've been playing Farcry, HL:S, and UT2k4 no problems.

I feel the same way that you do, and I am gonna try an LCD, I think they are cheap enough to dish out money for experimentations.

I think that 60fps is the optimal framerate. I think that after that, you will get diminishing returns. So 30-60fps is the framerate bandwidth. I think that 30fps introduces what I call frame-blur which is pretty much - ghosting. We know that high end LCDs can at least do 40fps without ghosting caused by slow response time. And a bit of ghosting my be introduced at 60fps. So I think that ghosting isn't a big concern anymore.

But, until I experiment myself, I cannot fully recommend it.

wtf? my 2001fp cost 640 bucks. 1500 is more like 24inches on a bad deal.

I've got a 2005FPW and I use it quite a bit for gaming. The ghosting is not very bad at all, and it doesn't weigh 65 pounds. (I tend to move my computer and go to LAN parties somewhat frequently, so it's an important factor for me.)

If I had money to burn, I'd buy a nice 22" CRT to do just my gaming on (1600x1200 at 109Hz = ), but I don't.

i play fast paced games like tribes and source and the 2005fpw runs sweet. widescreen native res is so much better than the standard aspect ratio. had to buy an ati x800xt to run it at a decent frame rate though =)

most 12ms and 8ms LCDs are good for games, and some 16ms panels are, too, but there are a lot of 16ms panels that suck, so it's a gamble unless you've seen reviews for that particular monitor.

Samsung makes nice 8ms panels, and so does hyundai (I'm using the hyundai 8ms L90D+, and it's great - i think it's like $350 on newegg).
