I got hooked on garmin with the vivofit awhile back...still never understood why people would get a fitbit that you had to charge every 4 or 5 days versus the garmin that had watch batteries that lasted over a year (mine lasted 18 months)...

Goes to show how marketing and image are more important than functionality I guess...I am using a Fenix 5 now which I charge about every 10 days or so (I run about 4 times a week, anywhere between 20-30 miles)...

Haven't been able to sync all day...looks like they might have been hit with a ransomware attack...

I have a 5-inch Garmin GPS in my car that I snagged used
off Craigslist for $10 when my old one croaked awhile back.

Does that count as "hooked"?

I've used Garmin GPS units long time.
GPS 72
Rino 120 (crap)
GPSMAP 76S
GPSMAP 76CSx (still use as personal GPS)
GPSMAP 60CSx (use as work GPS after I killed my work 76CSx. I still prefer the 76CSx but someone in the office was no longer using this unit so I can't justify buying a new one.)

I still take my old Garmin Handheld GPS with me through the woods. While my phone GPS is certainly faster and easier on the eyes, the Handheld GPS' batteries last forever, it's weather proof and impact resistant if it takes a drop, and is simply better suited to the purpose.

I completely forgot about Garmin GPS products...

At one point that was all they did ... pretty sure its still the bulk of their business.

Smart-phone nav is fine for a few quick trips but it's no substitute for a reasonably up to date dedicated GPS especially way out in the middle of nowhere.

I admit the idea of a garmin smart watch caught my eye. I think a lot of people are sold on Fitbits thanks to all of their biometric data (for example, it has some functionality that tracks your O2 levels and sleep states). My wife was concerned with the quality of my sleep and got me a fitbit for those features more than any sort of GPS tracking (although its nice as well).

Not sure what other smart watches offer those features. Does your Garmin?

With most cell-phone based navigation if you lose cell-service (or it gets very weak) you lose navigation.

A stand-alone GPS needs only GPS.
I keep all the maps on my device, updated monthly. I'm using OsmAnd. Not as good as google, but it gets me where I need to go, and works anywhere with sky exposure.

edit:
and no spying!

I still have my first garmin GPS!! Large screen and easily readable!
But since I started using the GPS on my cell phone the Garmin is kept in a drawer!

Stand-alones are a bit easier to use too plus leave your phone free for other stuff.

I will check out OsmAnd though ... is it free?

It's both libre and gratis. It uses openstreetmap data. Where modern mappers like google tell you where you can eat, and give tons of extraneous info, OsmAnd is more like an old school paper atlas digitized. It has plenty of cartographic options, but not many "extras". Also, searching for specific addresses can be iffy, but it'll get you to the road you want, and close to where you want to go, but you may have to take it from there. You can also contribute to openstreetmap to make it better.

This is the full version from the repo I use and endorse. I believe the Play store version may be crippled in some way, with a paid "pro" version, but I'm not sure. I don't really use Play store aside from a couple one-offs, and I use an alternate client for that, so no google account.
