Any GeForce 8800 Series Price Cuts?

I've decided to go ahead and spring on the 8800 GTS (640MB). My only question is if any price cuts are expected within the next month? With the new cards coming out.

No. Because,

1. No competition from AMD
2. Give lots of time to their AIB partners so they can get rid of G7X series inventory. (Look how long 7600 GT stays just above $100. 4 months? 5?)

There's been consistent price drops on all of the G80s. The 640MB GTS can be had for $350-$360 AR, the 320MB GTS for $260 AR, the GTX for $520-540 AR. The lack of competition from ATI just means NV and their AIB partners are left to compete with themselves and make room for slightly improved rehashes of their existing products.

I wouldn't expect too much in terms of price drops when the 8900s are released. The leaked roadmaps and price points show a comprehensive line-up that cover pretty much every price: performance market with little room for the 320MB and 640MB GTS to drop. The GTX will drop a bit though to @$450 below the 8900GTS at $500.

I can wait till the end of April to get the card. There's some decent deals on it right now, $30 rebate at Newegg. Is that the best to expect, or just go ahead and wait it out till I need it and see what happens on prices?

Waiting is always good. Longer you wait the cheaper the price. But when it comes to video cards usually waiting is almost pointless other than price since something better is just a few months off. At least with motherboard,CPU,memory, ect the wait is much longer(usually a year or so) for something else to come thats worth upgrading to. I sold my X1800XT back in Jan and I have downgraded to a 6800GS. I am sitting by waiting on the 8600 series to see how they bench. If one of the 8600's doesn't outperform the X1800XT by quite a bit I will spring for a 8800GTS 320mb.

I might just wait for Crysis/UT3 since those are the reason for me to upgrade and I want to best DX10 card I can get in the $200-$250 range.

waiting for the sake of waiting is never good; there's always something new around the corner, and you'll wait indefinately. change for the sake of change isn't good either. what you have to do is weigh the performance of the games you play vs the cost to improve the performance (not just the cost, rather the value. ie costs vs benefit).

if you aren't playing anything that frustrates you with low performance, then by all means wait it out and see if the price drops, or something better becomes available. if there's a game you're playing and performance just doesn't cut it, or your card doesn't support the features of the game, then pull the trigger and upgrade. $350 after MIR for a 640mb 8800GTS is a good value. if you're only running a 1280 display, $260 for a 320mb GTS is perhaps an even better value.

imo the best rule of thumb is to simply find the best value when you need (not want) it. what's the sense in saving $20-30 by waiting a few weeks hoping for a price drop if the game you want to play today is unplayable?

I'm building my system right now, from scratch. So there's no upgrading going on here. The reason for my asking about price cuts is I bought some RAM and then all RAM prices dropped $30-$40 a week later. I'd like to not get burned that bad again. Also, for what it's worth, my monitor resolution is 1680 X 1050.

You won't get burned for awhile

The 320MB GTS should be a pretty good fit for you at 1680x1050. Personally I think its going to be phased out when the 8900GS or even the 8600GTS hit the streets before it sees any significant price cuts. Its kind of a loss leader product for NV at $250-$300 so they have a presence in the lower high-end market until the rest of their line launches.

I'm willing to pay the price of the 640MB if there's a chance I'll be dissapointed with the 320. What I'm looking for is it to be able to play all of today's games flawlessly. Now if that means I need a GTX, that can't happen. Is the performance increase of the 640 worth the extra money. Also, which manufacturer would you guys suggest? I've seen a lot of people go with EVGA.

Yep, EVGA is the shizzle dizzle, my nizzle! Its got the Step-Up, in case a better card launches within 90 days, which I'm pretty sure will happen.

definitely go with the evga. i ordered the geforce 8800GTS 320MB 2 days ago and im waiting for it to arrive along with my opteron 170 and asus a8n32-sli deluxe. unfortunately i couldnt spring for the 640MB version, but really...my 6600GT was playing most, if not all of my games fine. i dont think you'll need 640MB until more demanding games come out. ill admit, quake 4 is different at ultra settings, but really, high quality and ultra quality look so similar in my eyes.

ah well, we'll see. i would take the 640MB over the 320MB, but i just dont see how any of the games i play will use even 256MB...besides, there is also the step-up for 90 days, so maybe/hopefully the 8900 series will come out before june.

eVGA 8800gts 320mb is lowered $20 within last 2 weeks, from $299-$20 rebate to now $279-$20 rebate. Hold on longer if possible

The MSI 640MB for $399 was just added today I believe. Surprisingly cheap. I'm having trouble about my planned $499 eVGA 640MB Superclocked. I'm willing to pay a premium for the step-up option incase 8900 comes out in 90 days but $100 is a lot.

Are MSI cards good?

About to pull the trigger on the 640. I've got the money for it, so I figure I'll be safe now rather than sorry. Any rejections?

good choice imo.

i ended up getting it from buy.com - they had a $15 off of $200, so it ended up costing me $379 -$30 MIR -$15 instant. shipping was around $8 for 2-day (and it actually got to me next day). there's even another $10 off if you sign up for google pay, or at least there was when i ordered a few weeks ago.

Are MSI cards good?

Take a look at NCIX's sale price for the eVGA 640MB - 439.99 AR (cdn).

You can add it to your cart now and have that price good for another week, but the sale 'ends' Tomorrow (20th).

I'd add it to my cart then wait until Wednesday night to see the new sale prices

The MSI from Memoryexpress is tempting at $399... It was added today and should be instock in the next day or two. I'm in Edmonton and I always enjoy buying things and taking them home that day vs online Without the eVGA warranty + step up, along with having 2 MSI cards die over the last 4 years makes me hesitate though.

I also really want the 640MB version, as I'll be using this card in my HTPC running at 1920x1080.

hmmm what to do

Thanks for the heads up. The 640MB eVGA is $459.95 AR at Memory Express, so a bit more. I usually buy from them locally beacuse of picking it up instantly, no shipping, 7 day return/exchange (I love this for RAM, as I always end up having issues with RAM not running at spec etc). I think I'll end up buying the 640MB Superclocked. The MSI is so tempting at that price (OOS here now) but I'd rather pay more for step-up and lifetime warranty/good service of eVGA.

P.S. if you need large hard drives, Directcanada.com is selling Seagate 7200.10 500GB SATA2's for $169 (free shipping on orders >$300). I just ordered 2. They are $209 each at Memory Express/NCIX!
