Any good FREE dvd burning software?

Back in 03' or so, oem and retail dvd drives came with decent software, not great, but decent. Now most come with nothing!!! Any free software I can use?

This will be for a friend still using windows XP and is replacing a CDRW with a DL DVDRW.

I like imgBurn

ditto on that. didn't quite like deepburner's UI, imgburn is very intuitive except for few tasks which weren't too hard to find with a bit of googling.

i use infrarecorder...hasnt failed me yet! although the other alternatives listed are just as good, if not better

I partially agree, but Ashampoo is not FREE. It + my Samsung burner + Verbatim DVD-RWs = failed burns + can not erase. The Verbatims work fine with all other burning software.

InfraRecorder, best freebie IMO.

I've recently notice a problem with both DeepBurner and CDBurnerXP in Windows 7. If you have AHCI enabled, and a PATA burner, neither program seems to recognize the burner. Weird but CDburnerXP will still burn ISO's, but not regular cd compilations.
Its noted on the CDburner and DeepBurner sites this is a problem.
Imgburn seems to have no problems.

Free legal versions of Ashampoo burning studio are easy to obtain. Just follow the link in my first post.

So, I'd been using ImgBurn and this thread prompted me to give CDBurnerXP a try. Started out good, nicer/cleaner ui than ImgBurn. Then I burned a test dvd.

burn time--
cdbxp: 9:54
imgburn: 8:43
(no big woop there)

BUT... ImgBurn was only using 2-3% cpu while CDBXP was using 60-70% throughout the burn!

Not sure what's going on there, something wrong or is this normal for this program? I guess I'll stick with ImgBurn.

No it hasnt. I've just installed 2.5.1.0 and it let me opt out of everything.

Based on Anandtech suggestions I went with starburn. It works OK. For reference, Windows 7 has a built in burner that actually does a halfway decent job. You dont get to select burn speeds or anything, but it seems to work every time.

Well, you certainly owned MORPH, but, it looks like that download includes assloads of spyware and adware.

I would need a hacked version of that which doesnt include all the bullshit. And doesnt put me on their mailing list.

I don't blame you. I wasn't sure if it was mandatory to do the Ask Toolbar and all of that crap. I hadn't tried it to see what all there was to it so I was just showing that it was available. I haven't used Nero since Nero 6 which is what I still use. Just thought that might have been an alternative but guess not. hehe
