Dude, what's holding those platforms up? Fleas?

The tube is a cardboard concrete form, so I cut holes just big enough to fit the corner of board, then used liquid nails on the inside and a couple of L-brackets on the outside. They've gotten a bit floppy over the course of a few years, though....

The funny thing is that I only had to buy the tube and the glue. Everything else was stuff I had pack-ratted away...

The key is to be realistic about what you will actually reuse.
My grandmother fails at that...

I'm not looking forward to cleaning that house out when she an my grandfather pass on. I emptied the living room while she was in rehab after a surgery and it took 4 dump loads in my truck and 2 to Goodwill.

My poor granddad, he hates it.

Wow now that really is clinical hoarding!

My guess is that it's a fairly common thing and that show just brought it to the foreground. I know lots of people have little bits of hoarding instinct. It wouldn't take much emotional tweaking to turn most of these people, me included, into true hoarders.

My grandparents built a new house below the hill from their old house to get away from their clutter.

That place is amazing MrPickins; stuff to look at everywhere. It looks like some of the better junk shops I've been to. You have to stand in one place for minutes just to take it all in :^D

I don't hoard everything, but I definitely have a good number of items that I don't currently use but fit in that "I see where I could use one in the future" category.

my apartment is cluttered no doubt, but it's more the result of laziness than an emotional attachment to anything. I could get my place cleared out with a big garbage can and a couple spare hours.

part of my problem is that since my town canceled "clean out" days and I have no means of transporting large furniture or appliances myself, some crap just sits around. I've got 4 tables, a desk, and a dishwasher that I'd love to throw out. what I'll probably end up doing it calling one of those services like 1-800-got-junk to come and pick it up after I've moved everything else out of my apartment.

Worst hoarding I am doing is hoarding flash drives-- I have 30 some odd.

Everyone needs 30 flash drives, right?

I usually use my first one -- 128 Meg which I bought from Meritline for 30 bucks.

As a kid I used to spend summers with my grandparents, and my twin sister and I would go digging for neat stuff in the back rooms.

It's amazing, even though we did a good job covering our tracks, the next summer there would usually be a note left in the area we had last picked through asking us to stay out of her stuff.

How she knew we were back there still puzzles me...

You'd be surprised how "orderly" the clutter can be sometimes; I'm a packrat and my family always tells me to clean stuff up but with rare exceptions I can usually find what I need amongst the piles. For example, I have magazines and paper/documents on one bookshelf row and books on the other side. I keep any important diplomas/certificates in that vicinity so if I need to check my diploma, it's there.

Granted my clutter hasn't risen to the level of hoarding (I can still see the hardwood floor and move), but what seems like clutter to most people is "orderly" to me, as long as I'm the one responsible for managing it.

Why the hell would you need to keep your diploma on hand to check it?

Did I graduate? I can't remember!

Heh it was a hypothetical example, but I haven't scanned in my diploma so if I need to make photocopies and send it in, say for future educational purposes, I need to be able to retrieve it.

My aunt seriously suffers from pack rat syndrome. She has two 15' x 30' sheds in her back yard that are full of newspapers and other worthless crap. At a minimum there are 200 bankers boxes full of newspapers. She also has an broken down car in her front yard that she has been using as a closet for the past 15 years. No matter that a rat chewed through the floor boards a few years back and shat/pissed all over the clothes she has stored in there.

Its sad really. Utterly disgusting. But sad too.
