Any ideas when an iPod Touch refresh should be coming?

Wife should be graduating this spring and getting her RN license, thinking of getting her an iPod Touch as a gift, I know she has mentioned there are some handy nursing apps in the past so it should work good.

Wondering what the usual schedule for refreshes is, or if Apple even considers it a big deal anymore? Seems like the current design is a bit dated, but I guess if they don't trot out a new one at the (supposed) iPad event, I may as well just get my order in?

Just would hate to buy her one and have them roll out a new one in May.

fall's a long way ahead, but i hope they put at least 512mb on the next iPod Touch. 256mb is not enough esp when jailbroken.

I leave my phone in my bag and carry the Touch, throw Google Voice on it, add WiFi and you have a mad texting device.

Only thing I'd suggest instead of it would be an iPhone.

I also work where we do minimally invasive procedures, and have a Logitech Bluetooth enabled speaker coming, will put the speaker in one corner of the procedure room, and stream Pandora to it from where I work, monitoring the patient, I won't even have to get up to change the volume or music. It'll be awesome.

So, how does last years schedule ruin your timeline?
MacBook Pro - February
IPad - March
IMac - May
Mac Mini - July
MacBook Air - July
IPhone/iPod - October

The only thing you can kind of even predict with Apple is CE releases, and even they shifted that last year with the October iPhone release.

Apple refreshes Mac's as parts become available. You can guess it will happen between 12-16 months, but people who thought that about a MacPro have now been waiting almost a year past an estimated refresh date. Poor MacPro users :-(

But to the OP, just get it now. Hopefully, when Apple updates it this year, it will get a faster processor, but that's not a guarantee.

Ordered yesterday, Fedex has it enroute, got the engraving done, even the gift box and card. Gives me some time to get it set up, I am thinking it will just be PC-less more or less and can just sync some music over manually.

Will have to figure out the best approach regarding the iTunes account and all, I have one I used only for the Match service (upgrade crappy old 90's mp3's ) or I could make one for her I suppose.

Looks like the Epocrates app should be a good one for her, Pliablemoose do you use your Touch for any nursing apps? Was looking online, the big services are pretty pricey but if she got use out of it they would be well worth it (especially with updates etc). Her book form Davis Drug Guide sitting here has what looks like every page marked with tabs, post it notes, paper scraps, etc. Good call on the Google Voice, would be a nice way to communicate with her cheaply when she is working. I have a few numbers already I could use for that.

Just use your existing iTunes account. That way if you get another idevice all the purchases and stuff will be in one place since Apple doesn't seem to have any way to merge accounts currently.

I've used most of these, they're pretty good.

If her hospital has guest WiFi, Google, Bing, Wolfram Alpha are great.

What kind of dept will she be working in?

I use the hell out of Google Voice.

I figure I won't be buying any of the apps right away anyway, she will graduate and then have to pass the NCLEX-RN, then go find a job. From what I've read so far may as well wait to see what kind of facility she gets into anyway (if they recommend any brand of app, free wifi, etc).

iPod touch is a great choice. If only they had bumped up the specs last year. Having only 256mb of ram is starting to cause some problems. If it even gets refreshed, I hope it will at least have the A5 and 512mb of ram.

Hell yeh. The only reason I am still on my 2007 ipod classic is cause it is 160gb. I would love that capacity in a touch format. Plus, a REAL EQ please! Is that so hard apple!?!?!?

idk what the wifi situation is like at her facility, but make sure she knows before she wants to use a lot of data hungry apps. At the rural hospital where I work at, they've had to shut off the guest wifi network. Even though it was seperate from the hospital wireless network, because it shared the same backhaul connection, they had to get rid of it for hippa reasons, which I guess require a seperate network gateway, which we did not have and it was deemed not essential to get another network. Most bigger places it shouldn't be a problem, but quite a few of the apps I use at work require network connection, so I went with an iPhone.

Well, she won't get it until she graduates in May (and oh boy she better or that engraving is going to look dumb) and then she will start prepping to get her license and then job hunt. We're in the Detroit Metro area for now so any facility should have some decent tubes and stuff. Maybe someday if we get out in the boonies (which is kind of a plan) we will have to adjust but that is years away.

They couldn't just do a cheap cable modem or DSL plan? Like $40 a month just for guest access to the internet?

Got it in, set up a separate account for her, synced over some pictures for her, went through all the settings, updated to 5.1, set up iCloud and backed it up for her, and then packed it away into the infernal packaging from hell Now it has to sit for 2 months. This will be harder on me than it is for her

edit: pretty slick. Wish it had a back button, but whatever...screen is sharp for sure, still a bit small for my fingers and eyes, but I'm sure she will be fine. Amazingly thin for sure.
