Any ideas?

Hello,

PC set-up = I have a Soyo Dragon Ultra motherboard , SiS chipset, a 1.6 gig Intel processor, a Sony cdrom, and a Yamaha 20x burner. Both are on the same Ide channel.
Problem = If I try to burn a cd that is large in size ( like a video game), I get through the lead-in, then the burning process halts. The burning program (it doesn?t matter which one, I have tried them all) locks up and the computer has to be restarted. The burner does not appear to be getting any data from the hard drive.
One day out of pure frustration, I put the cdrom and burner in my wife?s old 633 meg Compaq, same Ide channel, and the cd burned fine. I tried two burning programs that did not work on my rig, and both burned fine on hers.
Small music cd?s burn fine on my rig, but large files lock up. I am simply out of ideas, and looking for something I might have overlooked. Thanks for any help??.

Make sure the burner is the master on the channel. You could also try putting the burner as the slave on channel with the hard drive. If all else fails, a pci IDE card is another possible solution.

You may also try to copy the contents of the CD onto your HD & try to burn that onto the Burner.

Thanks for the replies. I will do some more experimenting.Something is definately interrupting the data flow.
Seph, It malfunctions either way. HD to CD, or copy on the fly.

Skip,
Can you explain why I would want my burner as the master on the secondary channel instead of the slave?. The manual said that slave is the normal if used in conjunction with a cdrom. Just looking for info. Thanks.

Sometimes a burner is just happier as the master. FYI just in case you didn't know: It doesn't matter which connector hooks into the drive itself. I always thought for a long time that the end connector had to be the master and that was not true at all.

Thanks for the tip. I would have had to remove my burner and cdrom, and switch them to get the cable connectors to match up right.
I seem to remember years ago, with floppy drives, that it did matter.I think it had something to do with the twist in the cable. Thanks again.

Skip,

Well, I tried putting the burner as the master with the same result. The burner inicated it wants to write, but there is no hard drive activity.Everything freezes after the lead-in is burned.I am assuming this is a function of the software, so that explains why it gets that far.
I guess I will have to get a pci card and bypass the onboard controller. This SOYO is not the greatest motherboard I have ever owned.
Why it will burn a music cd compilation without messing up is a deep dark mystery.

Yes I do.
The only thing that comes to my mind is that the music cd's are smaller in size, and contain no video. Other than that, I am clueless why it will not work on my 1.6, and works fine on my wifeys cheesy 633. She thinks that is very funny.....lol

First off, make sure you are using the larger CD-R size. I've also seen this problem, but only when trying to copy games or other copy protected software CDs.

It has burned some playstation games just fine, and locked up on others.
The problem may be intermittent, but when it starts, it makes a bunch of coasters.
I just finished another retry, and I have a new shiny coaster that was supposed to be a video cd.
