Any ipod fans know ...

Any iPod users ever had this problem ...

(XP, Firewire)

iTunes crashed while the ipod was connected. The ipod interpreted a hard removal (which it doesn't like). Anyway, the ipod can't be recognized on my pc or my laptop (or even a mac). But it plays fine. I just can't load new music onto it. Anyone know how I can get the data off the ipod so I can wipe the ipod hdd clean and start over?

Have you tried resetting it? Check your manual for details, I forgot how you reset.

The install disc comes with an option to restore factory settings, try that.

And my iPod got STOLEN on friday, so i wonder if i qualify as a fan...(ALWAYS lock your car, even if it's a junker. My iPod slipped out of my pocket, I didn't know it was in the car. Left the door unlocked, and got picked clean. VERY angry :brokenheart: )

Friend of mine has a 40gig ipod and had lots of problems with it and itunes. Replaced itunes with a prog called Anapod. This is what the ipod software should have been. Gives more features to your ipod such as some pda functions too. He was able to transfer 3000 songs in under 10 minutes. It's free to try but worth buying.

I can reset all the settings (maybe format) but surely there's a way - since the music files are still O.K., I can listen to them on the ipod just fine - to backup those mp3s before I format the ipod.

Have you tried it on someone else's computer? If it doesn't let you connect to any computer, and you can't get your music off of it, and Anapod doesn't work... you'd better make up a playlist, write it down somewhere, and prepare to get all that music over again.

I can't think of anything else if none of the above options work.
