I am looking for advice if anyone has an opinion...

I am looking at getting a new (used) mower which happens to come with a snow blower attachment...

It is a x320 2008 with 260 hours...

clean service record from the description and no red flags...

I have not had a chance to see the unit in question yet but I talked to the seller and am working on a meeting.

He is asking 4,200 but I had a line on one with less hours and he sold it for 4,000...

I was 'thinking' about offering 300-500 less but was curious if that is out of line.

He said he is selling it because he is going to hire a service vs. cutting his own lawn

I have never bought a lawn mower of this scale....I need a new mower and a snow blower as well...(70 x 40 foot driveway) so that would obviously work out great...

Any input or comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

Lee

It really depends on the market in your area. I'd suggest looking into what the dealers charge, craigslist etc to determine if you are getting a fair deal.

a brand new 2011 is over 4 grand for reference. I have been combing CL for and similar models go for around 3 for similar hours

the blower goes for around 1400 or so for new...

The only reference I have is the previous one I saw that was in similar shape that sold before I got a hold of the guy (4000)...

My thought is the difference in hours 80 vs 260 (everything else was almost the same)

I'm familiar with the x320, I own an x300. Look-up prices through your local John Deere dealer (or find another one online) to determine what the unit sells for with that number of hours on it. Again pricing can vary based on your market, plus it's not Deere season at the moment.

Also, you could try to ask over at a tractor enthusiast site:

I was looking at the x300 as well...the biggest difference for me is the deck size...like the idea of a 48 in deck...

I have been looking and I think I have pretty decent price point for the mower...

2,500-3,000 is a decent / common range for that year and # hours...

The wildcard is the blower...that can vary...and it is hard find for sale used...and they go about 1,400 new I think...

I'd offer $4,000. I like round numbers.

Edit:
Aside from liking round numbers, $200 off makes it a better deal without being insulting. Based on your numbers, what he's asking isn't bad, but not a great deal. $200 off would make it a better deal. Keep in mind that winter coming automatically makes the snow blower worth more.

I think it's slightly overpriced but your going into snow season so he's probably not going to budge much. The x320 is a great mower and that would be a sweet setup. Does the price include the weights and chains? Make sure you check the oil and air filter and when they were last changed. That should tell a little about how well it has been maintained.

The deal does include the weights (4) and the chains...

my initial thought after deliberating about this and asking a couple of co-workers who are into the tractor scene would be to try for something around 3,700 and see what the guy responds with.

Good idea on the air filter...I had planned on giving it the once over with the fluids and anything else I can observe visually...but that is a good point.

Thanks,

Lee

Lawn tractors usually suck for snow removal. I would ditch the turf tires, add chains, and add as much wheel weight as you can. I finally just said fuck it and bought a 4 wheeler and put a plow on it. My snow removal is about 100x quicker and easier now.

I bought a used 350cc 4wd ATV w/ a good plow for $1300 total.

Funny you should mention this. I was just wondering if they made a 4 wheeler with a self powered blower that attaches on the front. Like yours I've only seen plows. I just worry that my driveway will become ever smaller as the plowed mounds start to creep inward.

They do make such a deal...the guy I talk with about this has a large area to plow and he showed me a set up (expensive) with a blower that attached to a 4 wheeler...was throwing snow upwards of 80 feet.

If I can get a link I will post the one he showed me previously.

EDIT here is the link

also I'd verify the serial number with John Deere to make sure it's not stolen. Its a big problem down here.
