Any knife experts here?

So 10 guys somehow got into my dorm building today, and apparently were doing the equivalent of stalking 2 girls on my floor over some video tape. They were obviously drunk, and just as obviously pissed. The 2 girls and another guy on my floor confronted them, I noticed what was going on about halfway through the discussion and went down to offer support. They knew some crazy sh!t (the girls' cell phones, AIM, the girls say none of this is posted online) They subtlety tried to provoke both of us guys, and some of them were obviously looking for a fight. Nothing came of it, but it was close for a while. In close quarters (we were crowded in a stairwell), a knife might have been useful if something had broke out. The other guy has given both girls his 2 other knives, but no one else on the floor has one.

Also, my university allows us to carry knifes < 6" as long their not switchblades or butterflies.

Disclaimer 2.0: Nobody seems to be following the original disclaimer, so here's the key phrase: We agreed only to draw if they attacked first. Period. It's not like we're going to bust them out, twirl them around and say GTFO the next time we see them.

Disclaimer 3.0: I DID NOT WANT A FIGHT. I MADE A CONSIDERABLE EFFORT TO NOT LOOK THREATENING. I'm not so stupid as to think the 4 of us could've taken on 10 guys. I'm just saying if it comes down to it, I want to be as prepared as I can be.

Disclaimer 4.0: Fighting is, and always will be in my book, a last resort, only to be implemented if attacked. Killing is the last resort of a fight where you can not disable your opponent and your life is openly threatened. The only time the knife would be utilizes is if my life or the lives of my floor mates were directly and actively threatened with no escape route available.

We contacted our RA and he says he'll call the cops if he sees them around, but he's not here all the time. We also had a nice bottleneck for defensive purposes (only 2 could've come at us at a time, and they weren't that big).

The other guy and me agreed to only draw in defense if they came back.

Even if you can legally carry one you should have some kind of training or you'll probably end up hurting yourself. Get some bear spray, that should do the trick.

I know some basic self defense. I believe I can effectively combine punches with knife thrusts. I also threw knives (as in boot knives) for fun on camp outs back in my boy scout days. Got pretty good.

They weren't armed as far as I could tell (most of them weren't wearing any jackets, and not that many pocket bulges). Knife > Fist

Giving girls knives is usually a bad idea. Get them pepper spray and restraining orders. You probably shouldn't be pulling out a knife either, especially if you're vastly outnumbered.

Uh, if 10 guys attack me, 2 girls, and another guy at once, I think knives might help.. It's not like we're going to whip them out the next time we see them and say GTFO. We agreed: only draw if they attack first.

Unless you are fully trained, there is no way you can take on 10 guys with a knife ( or even a gun if they were determined enough). Stop trying to act the macho.

you need to get some of the big ass cans of pepper spray like leo have, the ones that are like a little fire extinguisher. bringing in a knife means somebody is going to get stabbed and somebody is going to jail, possibly for life

so what was the video tape of that you would die for? would like some screen shots

I'm not acting fvcking macho I was honestly concerned for safety of my floormates, and IF they had attacked me, a knife would've been far better than no knife. I'm not saying I could whip their asses singlehandedly, but it would've been useful. Besides, they're frat guys, not thugs ('cept for one of 2 of them that might fall into that category)

Whose dying for a tape? I was just noticing that 10 half-drunk frat guys had surrounded 2 girls and another guy. What was I supposed to do? My RA wasn't there, but at the same time their wasn't any signs of threat at that point that would merit my calling the cops. They were actually laughing, and most of them were level headed. Only 3 of them looked like they wanted to fight. Hell, only 3 of them looked like they COULD fight. I row for .5 hours to 1 hours 6 days a week. I'm not saying I could take all of them, and I wasn't intending to fight, but if they warned they might come back and I want to be prepared if a fight does happen.

Yeah, bear spray does sound girly compared to knives, but it's much more of a ranged weapon than a knife, doesn't send you to jail for involuntary manslaughter, and can't be twisted against you because you can lay them out before they get to you.

There are two possible scenarios how that will go do down, you pulll a knife and someone shoots your brains out, he gets off scott free, or you pull your knife and cut him and you spend life in prison.

Don't EVER walk around armed with a knife only.
