Some Dell Latitudes have them as well. Well, they used to as of a couple of years ago.

They are slowly falling out of favor as more and more users become more play oriented and less work oriented. (Gamers don't like it.)

The Dell Latitude e6400 (last year) had it as an option, but it is no longer listed for the successor, the e6500.

Toshiba stopped it a few years ago. Lenovo is the only one I know of at present. It also has to do with the fact that the Trackpoint is an IBM patent, and royalties are paid for its use, except probably, in Lenovo's case.

My Lenovo T60 has both Trackpoint and touchpad. But, I almost never use either one since discovering the Logitech VX Nano mouse.

Most Dell Latitudes should have them. Usually you'll find them in business oriented laptops.

My Latitude E4300 has Trackpad and Trackpoint. Admittedly, Dell's implementation isn't that good.

I love the trackpoints on my Thinkpads X22, X40, T42p, X61t. I've used Dells with the trackpoint, but not as good.

edit: What do you have against Thinkpads?

My HP/Compaq nc6400 has a trackpoint, as well as the trackpad. It was the only reason I bought the thing. $300 and I still have factory warranty for another 6 or so months.

Logitech rawks! That's all I use... keyboards and mice! They're cheap, and do the job.

I've been using a Logitech V220 daily, for almost 3 years - and I've only replaced the batteries twice. No kidding!

Is the VX Nano easy on batteries too? If so, I might pick one up.

Back on topic...

Wikipedia is your friend...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P...tick#Naming_and_brands (Wikipedia - Pointing Sticks - Naming & Brands - Current Models)

I'm a Toshiba Fanboi. This looks pretty hot (to me)...

http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/pdet.to?poid=435020 (ToshibaDirect - Toshiba Tecra A10-S3511)

Inputs and Controls
86 key US keyboard, Windows Mobility Center Button, Toshiba Assist Button, Toshiba Accupoint® II and TouchPad? dual pointing device.
You can have your cake and eat it too - oldskool 'TrackPoint' AND conventional TouchPad!

Anyway, that should get you in the ballpark...

Heh! Your lappy has a PointStick, not a TrackPoint!

Don't mean to pick on you, but...

All these registered/trademarked names is what's confusing everybody.

Here is a list of various monikers from Wikipedia:

  • TrackPoint
    PointStick
    NX Point
    Pointing Stick
    StickPoint
    QuickPoint
    Track Stick
    AccuPoint
    FineTrack
    Mouse emulator
    Pointing Stick

The fact of the matter is, most of the 'experts' in these forums rely on Google!

They need to expand their 'knowledge' by including Wikipedia - that's all.

I used to love the trackpoint, but touchpads have grown onto me. Less precise, but faster.

Personally though, I wonder why no laptops ever included trackballs (or some optical equivalent).

Very early laptops did include trackballs actually. The PowerBook 150 for example.

My first laptop (Soundbook) had a small trackball - terrible device! It picked up skin oil from the finger and then slipped its gears incessantly. I then had a couple of WinBooks that had trackpoints and touchpads. I really like HP's switch by the touchpad to turn it on and off. All lappies should have that. Nothing beats a small, wireless mouse.

My macbook didn't have a hardware switch for the trackpad, but instead would ignore input from the trackpad when a USB mouse was connected, or if the internal keyboard was being used (both features could be turned off in software).
