Not the best but ok?

I'm told that even though I don't overclock, I should really get good stuff anyway for the graphics on the flight sims. This is my last upgrade for an older rig.

I have 2x512 Corsair DDR3200 on my mb now, and am lookinig to double that hoping it helps some.

F.E.A.R is running a bit slow too, but that may be partially because of the card I'm still running, the GF6600? A 6800 AGP is on the truck now and may help, my first post didn't make that clear.

if your not overclocking then latency should be your only factor in memory(along with price of course). But the price/performance ratio of lower latency memory is a little too high in my opinion. the extra cost would be better spent(more ban g for the buck) on your graphics card or cpu.

You might want to take a look at this RAM. It's only $11 more after MIR, but it has a CAS latency of 2.

I also just ordered this combo for my computer. I'm also going from (2) 512mb chips. I'm hoping it will help with slow load times in BF2.

Those load times are most frequently a hard drive bottleneck and not a RAM speed bottleneck.

I'm not going to say that your statement is incorrect, because I'm not familiar with the causes for slow load times in BF2. However, I will say that ShotgunSi is not hoping for an increase in load speed from faster RAM, but from more RAM.

I'm not sure if this is applicable or not, but I noticed a huge increase in load speed in Doom 3 when I went from 512 MB to 1 GB of RAM. Doom 3 (along with everything else running) exceeded my 512 MB of RAM, so it was running off of the page file. Just starting the program went from 5 minutes down to about 30 seconds! ShotgunSi, if BF2 is currently maxing out your RAM and running off of a page file, then it should definitely increase you load speed. If not, then I'm not sure if it will or not.

I just ordered 2 GB of RAM as well, mainly because after I sell my 1 GB of TCCD, it will wind up costing me about $50. And I don't need overclockable RAM now that I'm switching from my current system to an opteron 165.

Agreed. I've read tons of threads of people stating 2gigs helps a lot in this game. Also the game stutters when a level first loads up, for the first few minutes. I'm curious if the extra memory helps there in these situations. Also my old memory if off to a different computer that needs it.

it should. I'll let you know when my 2x1 sticks arrive tomorrow.

Curious why a Opty 165 would reduce your need for overclockable RAM. I just purchase some g.skill ram to give me better overclockability for my Opty 165. Running at 9x302 FSB (or HTT if you prefer) and would like to run my Ram with better dividers (how about 1:1 )

because dividers apparently dont matter much for a64 in general according to several sources.

Ovenmitt and Stoneburner are right. I'm running my RAM at 258 with a 1:1 ratio right now (DDR516). If I ran a 5:4 ratio, my performance would suffer quite a bit, because of the lack of an on-die memory controller, and that's why I previously purchased overclockable RAM. The A64s (and opterons), however, don't suffer much from running a memory divider, so I ordered 2 GB of somewhat value RAM and plan on running a divider.

Lark888, running at 302HTT 1:1 would yield better performance than running at 3:2, but the cost does not justify the performance gain IMO.

For example, if you have $500 to blow on 2 GB of RAM and a video card, it wouldn't make sense to buy some uber-overclockable RAM and a 6800GS, rather than value RAM and a 7800GT. However, if you're running two 7800GTX 512MB cards in SLI, then by all means drop $300+ into your RAM to see some performance gains.
