One idea: if you take up an actual competetive multiplayer game which has good matchmaking (for example Starcraft 2), then even if most of the players are better than you, the game should match you with/against other players close to your skill, so lack of skill shouldn't stop you from getting fun, even matches.[/QUOTE]
In theory this should work, but some good players set up multiple accounts so that they get matched with newer players and this makes it very unfair. Maybe Battle.net prevents this though, come to think of it.
I have played a fair amount of COD4 online and never really got yelled at even though my K/D ratio was usually terrible. It just is not much fun after a while getting killed so much.
And I refuse to play MMOs partly for the problem of getting criticized by better players, but also because I would rather play a single player type game that has a definite storyline and ending resolution, and does not require meeting up with other players.
